the tribune stoufhfille oct thursday july 16 1s53 compensation to farmers for animals destroyed following last weeks cabin et meeting right honourable j g gardiner minister of agri culture announced that it is the intention of the government to introduce amendments to the law governing the payment of compensation to owners of live stock slaughtered for the pur pose of disease control con sideration of this question by the cabinet followed the com mitment given by the prime minister on june 24th when he was speaking at wingaam ont the existing law provides maximum compensation which may be paid for individual an imals in the case of hogs the limit values are 3000 for grades and 5000 for pure- breds in the recent outbreak of hog cholera it has been found nec- tsary to destroy some 2800 hogs for the control of this disease for lightweight hogs the full commercial value has been paid but for heavier hogs which had a higher value than the limits provided in the law owners have received less than the market value it is the intention to amend the law so that the full market value of each hog at time of slaughter can be paid to the owner records of all animals slaughtered in the present out break have been kept in such a way that where full value has no been paid this can be done after the law nas been amended commenting on the hog cholera situation generally the minister observed that there had been no new cases in the present outbreak since june 19th this fact said the minister gave reason for hope that the disease was under control but veterinary officers had urged that every precaution should be continued and that farmers re port any signs of the disease golden s annual summer learanc ladies dresses clearing at half price pretty prints in gay summer shades made
