wilcox iake only to be faced with a diamond rougher than wintersteins sravel pit the stouffville manaaement re fused to start the same for fear of a player sustaining a severe injury so the contest was called off until a later dae on friday niht the local hardballers travelled to richmond hill and re ceived a rude shock when only six hill players showed up for the contest whether or not the yonke street crew is attempting to form a second king and his court is not exactly known dut the stouftville squad piled their equipment back in then- cars and returned home at every same on the road the con tests have not started until after 730 pm or have not been played at all here in stouffville the local club is always the first on the field if the managers of the neighboring clubs find rtiey are unable to field a team they might at least have the presence of mind to splurge a dime and default the game the opposition starts out on its ten or fifteen mile joy nc before le avooimrmmsk imtops out woodbridge legion announced last week that i was drop ping out of the markham township softball league just when the clubs had readied the halfway mark in the schedule this decision certainly was not well received by the itague execu tives after they had bent over backwards in permitting the new comers an entry in the group the excuses offered behind such a decision were not only weak but ridiculous xot enough players and no sponsor were the reasons given for the sudden with drawal one would think that an area the size of woodbridge would be able to scrape up nine softball players twice a week and as for sponsors there is only a couple of teams in the eightclub circuit who have received financial backing the majority of clubs are selfsponsored early in the season woodbridge practically crawled on its hands and knees before the league management in an effort to take the place of clare- mont who move down into the whitby league a number protested strongly an entry from woodbridge due to the distance factor but finally conceded following a special meeting held at unionville now it appears that one club will stand idle every tuesday and thursday night such a plan is bad for the league and confusing to the spectators in the future a penalty should be enforced on any club which enters the league and then withdraws before the schedule is completed some players would suffer a heart attack if they were forced to dig down into their own pockets to buy themselves a stick of chewing gum other teams have been struggling along for years on a shoe string with barelv enough money to buy a few bats balls and pay the umpires but still they remain in the running for the love of the sport and the good of the group when softball in markham township becomes a game in which everything is handed to the clubs on a silver platter then the real object behind the sport will be lost be a better batter if you are to become a really good hitter you must develop skill at whipping the bat through with a sudden powerful flick of the wrists just before you hit the ball and to perform this whipping the bat movement you must develop a powerful welldeveloped pair of wrists and forearms heres how you can do both these things first get your self the heaviest bat you can find then wraji tape around the thick part of the bat until you have made it extra heavy now take hold of the bat as you would if getting ready to hit hold your bat out in front of you about chest high and start whipping the bat back and forth with a sudden hard flick of your wrists dont move your arms at all each time you flick your wrists try to whip the bat faster and with more power take a rest when your wrists and forearms get tired then do this with one hand and then the other until tired and finish up by doing it again with two hands on the bat repeat this as often as possible if you practice this complete stunt every day it wont be long before you will have developed two very important things that will help your hitting a great deal 1 a pair of strong welldeveloped wrists and forearms and 2 skill at whipping your bat through at the ball witli that allimportant last second flick of the wrists if you get the habit of whipping your bat through at the ball in this way and if you develop a strong pair of wrists and forearms you will have made a real stride toward becoming an outstanding hitter town girls double score on peaches in first meeting here the big derrick goes i work on another huge pole in memorial park lift ing and shifting it into posi tion atop are the new
