problem but remodelling the barn to provide for it is most easily done in the summer in principles of barn ven tilation wm kalbfleisch and jw white exnerimental farms service ottawa de scribe why ventilation of barns is necessary and two methods of doing it effectively one where electric power is avail able the other where it must be done by natural movement of the air a thousandpound dairy cow breathes approximately 2 cu bic feet of air per minute in on broadway at 54th street ideql accommodations for 500 guests private baths pressure showers and radio television tool alt- conditioned cocktail loungt and rtitaurant this action oxygen is absorbed and warm moist air containing carbon dioxide is given off this moisture ranges from 10 to 15 pounds per day or from a gallon to a gallon and a half o- ther livestock in groups of 1000 pounds each give off about the same amount of moisture as the dairy cow for the health of livestock stabled in the barn it is necessary to remove this foul moist air and admit a con tinuous supply of freshair the amount of fresh air re quired to remove moisture from a barn varies considera bly depending on the tempera ture and humidity of the air iside the building a large a- mount is required when the outside temperature is about the same as the temperature in the barn a relatively small volume is sufficient if the out side temperature is low because cold air will absorb more mois ture when heated to barn temp erature with the natural draft meth od of ventilation a vertical stack or flue is used to remove foul air from the barn while fresh air is admitted through vents located along the outside walls of the building a move ment of air is obtained in this system of ventilation because warm air is lighter in weight than cooler air thus the rela tively warm air from the barn tends to rise through the stack as it is displaced by cooler air that enters the barn through the fresh air intakes in mechanical or fan ventila tion warm moist foul air is removed from a barn with fans powered by an electric motor while fresh air enters the build ing througb intake vents sim ilar to those used for a natural draft system this system pro perly
