three townships object lo their county assessment representatives of three mu nicipalities in ontario county have voiced their disapproval of the l equalized assessment of the county reeve howard 0 dobson and deputy reeve malcolm bailey of teach twp reeve albert thaxter of scott twp ami deputy reeve stu art ball of uxbridge twp the only municipalities whose e qualized assessment was ad justed by the assessment com mittee all voiced their disap proval deputy reeve ball was the first to question the schedule presented to the ontario coun ty council at its june sessions in whitby this week uxbridse townships assessment had in creased according to returns filed by the local assessor by 8903 during the year because of new assessment mr ball claimed that the townships equalized assessment had in creased by 143713 in 1951 he said that he felt that this a- mount was too great but in stead of being reduced another 15000 had been added by the assessment committee 0 mclean ontario county assessor in replying stated that oxbridge township was the one municipality in the county which did not use the county system of assessment he further staled that he had accompanied the local assess or on a tour of the township end in one day had discovered 23500 in new assessment he stated that on another trip he had found about 7000 more this he said would make a to tal assessment of 30000 which was shown by the local assess or at only ss903 he pointed out that if this last amount and the 15000 added by the com mittee were totalled they would still fall short of the 30000 in new assessment which he knew to exist in uxbridse twp reeve dobson wondered why reach which had shown an in crease in new assessment of s7i3i should be further bur dened with 10000 adjustment mr mclean replied that he had found that reach township was the only municipality that had allowed considerable re ductions when assessments were appealed lie stated he had been invited to sit in on reachs court of revision for one day but had heard no dec isions or reasons made i think the council should have supported its assessor said mr mclean 1 have all the eonfi- dence in him there should be more like him reeve albert thaxter led the strongest attack against the schedule of equalized assess ment prepared by committee scott township the only town ship besides pickering and ra ma to show a decrease had shown a decrease of iis the committee had adjusted this to an increase of 50000 pick ering twp had shown a de crease of 303803 but litis was after the assessment of picker ing village amounting to 022- 202 had been taken off ramas assessment had been lowered by 20000 because of the twps inability to assess property owned by the ymca reeve thaxter claimed that the local assessor would cer- trinlv know more about the lo cal assessment than a coimtv assessor he claimed that the assessor in scott twp had u en the manual in making his as sessment and it was unfair to sav i am going to slap 50000 on scott township are we living in a democracy that one nitih can cliange an assessment at will he asked i feel a- shamed to so back to scott and till the rate pavers that 1 al lowed the county assessor to raise our assessment by -s50- 000 with no explanation reeve thaxter further claimed that this method of onnlizinc the assessment was mishtv un fair he said that there was natural growth in the twp o- fher than a cottage or two each year it is a high handed me thod he concluded reeve duncan mclntvre of the town of wwiibv chairman of the finance and assessment committee of the county coun cil replied to reeve thaxter he claimed that there had been a decrease of s 150 shown in the local assessment of scott 1 wp in the past four years ad- cd to that he said was this years decrease of s61s5 hej further pointed out that scon was the only twp showing such with the exception of rami a decrease in the entire county and pickering both mi whicn to meet june 24 county to choose new headquarters a decision is expectf 1 to be reached regarding the location of the york count seat by june 1 it was learned last week from warden asa cook the offer of the davis estate by miss mabse davis came too late for the committee to deal witii it and present a report at the present session of county council a special meeting is being called for june 2 and the com mittee hopes to members ac companied by the county en gineer harvey roses also in spected two other aropertiees w hich had been suggested ea municipalities had shown rea sons for their decreases there has been no fair attempt to keep up the standards said reeve mclntvre and then he asked what is the matter with scott is it blowing away reeve thaxter claimed that there were some farms in the township which were assessed higher than their sale value were not goins to take this sitting down he said well pay for any five men from this council to go over scott town ship and show where our as sessment has fallen down if you can well accept s50000 or even 100000 reeve thaxter continued by stating that he had a spring crop which he would give to any man who would harvest it and pay the taxes on the land upon which the crop is growing the report of the assessment committee and the attached schedule was then put to a vote in the council reeve thaxter called for a recorded vote that council voted against the re port those who voted against the report which was accepted by the other members were reeve dobson deputy- reeve bailey reeve isaac catherwood deputy reeve ball reeve thaxter and deputy reeve clare balsdon her in aurora the committee visited the old public school building and in newmarket the caradonna propertv at the eagle si entrance to town was inspected tnese are the three properties being consid ered at present by the commit tee asa cook reported the official offer of the 20- acre estate the family home of the late lion ej davi was presented at a meetins of coun ty council by reeve arthur evans the estate is in east gwillimbury township on the northern outskirts of newmar ket as many of the members from the northern municipali ties hvenl had an opportunity to view the propertv no decis ion has been made we want all these members to visit the properties and then at the june 21 meetins of york coun ty council we plan to make our recommendations said the warden asa cook the offer of the school in aurora was made some time ago by the aurora council it i understood that the cara donna propertv is a real es tate matter but the gift of the davis estate which is conser vatively estimated at 75000 has been offered to the county by miss davis as a memorial to her parents the university of cambridge says it has a machine that learns by experience if so the machine is smarter than most people the question today is is the woman in the car a head going to turn right turn leftor doesi she have a new engagement ring on pickerel major attraction but 37 violate game laws
