perfectly i ranching country dotted with artesian wells there is practically no rain and very little snow so that everything has to be irrigated we decided against the san luis because we thought it was too cold though the people there were the wannest and friendliest we have met we iived at johnstown near loveland for a year hoping to farm when bruce had learned irrigating but irrigating is not good for arthritis and farms are a terrific price so we fin ally moved to pueblo where we bought a house just three blocks from my brother art greer the climate here suits both bruce and merrilyn very vell merrilyns bronchitis has disappeared and bruce has very little pain so we are very happy pueblo is not the most beautiful in fact it is one of the least beautiful cities in colorado but we can main st residences located on the corner of albert st is the present jack smits home more familiarily known to older residents as the j l baker house the place was built by mr baker more than sixty years ago j l baker who was a town councillor here at one time was originally a storekeeper in lemon- ville he later moved to toronto and then returned to stouffviue where lie built this fine corner lot residence mr baker was joint proprietor in bakers sawmil and was issues of marriage licenses the place was owned by mr edw lloyd for some years although he never resided there and had sev eral tenants until it was purchased by mr smits some years ago the ap pearance of the corner has been considerably changed and the maple saplings planted nearly three ouart- eis of a century ago are now great solid maples the home was originally surrounded by a hedge which has been taken down giving place to a nice lawn mr smits added a garage to the property and a stone verandah was constructed at travelled just over 8000 miles we sold our trailer for exactly what we paid for it 110000 gasoline cost 15392 and we averaged over 14 miles to the american gallon which we consider excellent since we weve pulling a 2 ton trailer other travelling expenses in cluding car servicing oil trail er court costs and various odds and ends 12091 two new- trailer tires and tubes cost s152s2 over half of this last figure iwas unnecessary since we were thoroughly gypped by the only rogue we met in s0o0 miles and the whole a- mount could have been saved if bruce had got his brain wave a little sooner namely to hang a tin can on the trailer axle just an inch or so off the ground so that as soon as a tire started to go flat the tin rattled on the road and warn ed us to stop there was an other large expense some of which would be avoided by buying your trailer in ontario and having your car fitted for trailer pulling there this in cludes trailerhitch it has to be a very special job for a big trailer which cost us includ ing electric brake connections 1600 overload springs again they have to be very good ones 3150 license for trailer which would be cheaper in on tario 3250 and lastly again much cheaper if bought in on tario trailer insurance 10100 these items plus 2 5gallon cans one for trailer heater one for water for the desert plus 50c for weighing the trail er for the license total 21925 grand total of all expenses 0los0 or 16170 each if we were doing it again im sure we could reduce that figure bv at least 20000 but of course one always has to allow a mar- iin for emergencies also bear in mind that we had to have that 110000 cash to buy the trailer even though we did get i back eventually i didnt list the cost of food since one has tc- eat whether at home or a- way but it did cost a little more than at home because we couldnt buy in quantities we ate all our meals in the trailer and emphasized whatever was cheapest in the locality through which we were travelling for a three month trio covering 000 miles we feel that this was very reasonable when you consider that a family of four could spend that much in two weeks at a dude ranch for example anvhow we wouldnt have missed the trio for anything it was truly a wonderful experience and we heartily recommend trailer crave if you are a good driv er as the idea family vacat ion want to hear about color ado let me know and ill try to oblige bruce dorothy merri lyn and patsy joknson of gold garland which will help grace the front of torontos city hall for the coming cor onation mr lewis is also pre paring a special ken philips house on main st the small pipe which cros ses under the main st pave ment was leaking badly shut- offs are all too scarce in our water system and require very large sections of town to be
