in newman chapel toronto sudden stroke took mrs lehman on wednesday march 25th mrs kli lehman passed away suddenly at her home on burk- holder st stouffville in her 67th year mrs lehman lived practically all her life at atha until 1051 when she moved into her new residence here the deceased had been enjoy ing reasonably good health until saturday of last week she suffered a stroke and never recovered the late mrs lehman was a faithful work er in the altona christian church where she supervised a sunday school class for a number of years she also held ollice in the womens institute her husband prede ceased her two years ago mrs lehman the former ethel spears is survived by one daughter grace of stouff ville funeral service was held at the altona christian church on saturday best known and most highly respected residents of uxbridge town ship has been involved in municipal business for the past fortythree years and continues to carry out his duties as assessor and tax collector born at lambion mills a suburb of west toronto 75 years ago mr mcdonald moved to whitby and later to glasgow where lie resided for even years in 1s93 he fettled down in goodwood and has remained there ever since he received ids public school education at glasgow and goodwood later taking a busi ness course in toronto while attending goodwood public school he received his train ing on the three rs from teacher miss mable dickin son some of his schoolmate- ai that time were mr wesley whittleton on the 3rd con cession mr cecil lee east of goodwood and mr waller davey now living in toronto according to mr mcdonald the attendance at the school in those days was on a par with that of today mr mcdonald first entered the position of uxbridge township assessor in the year 1910 during those days the transportation facilities were by no means modern and mr mcdonald did prac tically the entire assessment job on foot he would gage his distance in order to arrive at the home of a friend at night fall where a hot meal and warm bed was always waiting because of the increased num ber of residences in the town ship it now takes some eight weeks to cover the area that was previously covered in five weeks some forty years ago when mr mcdonald first took over the assessment roll in 1010 mr jos millard of altona was clerk of the mun icipality mr john ashenhurst and mr ralph faulkner have been the recent assessors be fore air mcdonald once again took over the position in 1052 mr mcdonald has been the tax collector in uxbridge township since 101s a total of thirtyfive years he suc ceeded the late james howett who held the job sixteen years and mr thomas dowswell who retained the position for an eight year term during that span of years he has had a very limited number of tax sales with the majority of rate payers being most coopera tive he was also the secretary- treasurer of the goodwood public school for fifteen years and still serves on the good wood cemetery board over the years mr mcdonald has seen the reeves chair filled by such men as jack rae dave watson stuart ball and isaac wagg isaac cat her wood holds this important office at the present time this familiar goodwood resident is the last surviving member on the building committee which drew up the plans for the goodwood united church erected in 1914 mr mcdonald built himself a modern brick home in 1032 and has no intentions of ever vacating his childhood hamlet mr mcdonald has yet another position in which to occupy his time that of secy- treas of richardson masonic iodge he has been a member since 1912 and rose to the office of master in 1932 his father mr john mcdonald had previously held the honor in 1ss9 he has one sister mrs alfred pugh of toronto and one brother alfred who lives with mr and mrs mcdonald in goodwood down through the years mi distin mcdonald con tinues to carry more than his share of the municipal bur dens but in spite of his work he still has a few minutes to share with the many residents that have come to know him as a true friend former goodwood pastor awarded mbe in korea an ontario chaplain and stud ent pastor at goodwood six years ago has received the a- ward of a member of the order of the british empire for ser vices in front lines of korea the army announced this week capt james alexander fil- shie a native of mount forest served as protestant chaplain p the 2nd battalion of the prin ce patricias canadian light infantry and remained behind to become chaplain of the 1st battalion when the 2nd was rotated home every phase of the regiments life t- hi- concern capt fil- shies citation declared when casualties occurred or patrols had gone forward his self- appointed post of duty was at the side of the regimental med ical officer where his presence brought comfort to the wound ed his services held both in rear positions and in front lilies attracted large and regular at tendance retlecting his ability in leading soldiers in worship and making the sacred things of life real to them the cita tion said cap filshie was educated at vh toria college and the univer- tv of toronto and is now at prairie command and the usual full house of visitors together with a well balanced program and variety of classes made this years fair most outstanding keen bidding for the 10bsshel lots of registered oats and barley brought the top price of s300 er bus in barley and 250 for oats including the twentyfour farmers showing in the bacon show there was a total of seventytwo exhibitors the fcrtyeight competing in the crop section included thirteen new exhibitors and in all had one hundred and twentyseven exhibit- keenest competition was in spring grain with eleven showing early oats and sixteen in the class for a bale of firstcut hay there was a total of folty lots of excellent quality hay in the show the d clover class was the largest in many years the a e mckenzie special prizes for first year exhibitors were won by murray paris of bradford and stewart rumble of richmond hill included in the highest prize winners in the larger classes were frank and ted marritt of keswick mh farms milliken j m thirkle weston eugene lem on stouffville earl edwards schomberg the judges were t w brennand toronto g m gray barrio and g e jones oac guelph there was a full compli ment of eight township exhi bits of groups of three car casses in the bacon show and for a second time east gwii- iimbury won the premium honours this was perhaps the first time that all special prizes went to one township with the championship for individual carcass going to las morris of ravenshoe and the reserve championship to willard cryderman queens- ville the quality of the car casses unfortunately was not up to last years standard the special prizes by the york county hog producers assoc for the two best township exhibits went to east gwillim- bury and king followed by georgina and north gwillim- bury in the junior farmers seed judging competition there were thirteen contestants and the top honours for the t eaton trophies were an nounced by assistant agricul tural representative e k pearson as follows nelson buchanan unionville angus morton queensville eldred king markham duncan wes ton woodbridge the top award in the 75 bushel husking corn club was presented by w m cock- burn to harrison slicter of oormlcy in the afternoon following the discussion of the bacon carcasses and outline of the advanced registry policy for swine by mr finlay stewart of the canada livestock pro duction services president carl boynton of woodbridge called on w p watson ontario livestock commis sioner who gave a mast com prehensive ouline of the live stock outlook prefacing his remarks with a review of the history of recent years he gave the three hundred farm ers present a few glimpses of what the livestock outlook might well suggest like studying the weather patterns of the past are of assistance in
