comments theyll print your age few folk are satisfied with how old they are even between 13 and 24 the long long thoughts impair the delights of being 18 to 24 newswriters understanding this principle are using it to earry on a campaign to discourage people from having accidents they do this by printing the ages of the people who have them if helen clunk is run over she comes before the public and whats worse before those who know her as helen glunk 41 an accident is just about the only time her age will dog her like this she can get married or organize the floral society annual chicken pie social without her ages dogging her but having an accident isnt safe making shopping at home attractive every once in a while someone corner up with the suggestion that the people of stouffville should shop in their own home town and not travel to other centres to buy things they need the appeal is usually based on the theory that it is the patriotic duty of people who live in stouffville to make their purchases there this of course is not sufficient reason in itself to make anyone want to shop in their home town the greatest success in stimulating buyingathome will likely be met with when it is approached from the standpoint of making hometown buying attractive a great many of stouffvilles local merchants have been working towards this end during the last couple of years and particularly this spring lehmans shoe store oboyles meat market stouffers hardware curtis mens wear to mention only some of our local merchants who have made considerable improvement in their premises which all tend to improved business it is all a matter of desire the merchants desire that towns folk patronize them and so they must create a desire in the minds of townsfolk to do so there is no point in leminding people from time to time that it is their duty to buy at home customers must be wooetl in a practical way they must be shown why they should buy at home and if the merchants of stouffville wish to capture a greater share of potential home purchasing power they must continue to provide the reason and incentive many are doing just that new store fronts and modernized interiors are as big a businessgetter as can be found town planning is necessary stouffville chamber of commerce is taking a big step in the right direction by organizing an important planning and development meeting to be held here on april 9th town planning was little more than a pleasant theory comparatively few years ago now in most communities it is a reality indeed in the rapid indus trial and residential expansion of canada it is necessary some cities and towns have been alert to the need for regulated growth while others have allowed their ex pansion to proceed along haphazard lines the former are pleasant progressive communities the latter are full of headaches for themselves and everybody else every town regardless of its size has a pattern which is the result of the social economic and physical forces which first molded it and are acting upon it some of the forces are obvious and measurable others may still need study a town plan cannot change the natural forces but it can guide them control the rate of change and smooth out difficulties the character of a town is determined to a large extent by the principle resources which led to its devel opment a mining town is different from a market town a summer resort may spread along a shore line while a town whose industry is directly concerned with imports and exports clings to the harbor area which itself set the original pattern in settlement and industrial growth the pattern of a town is also a result of its site geological situation hills rivers coastlines govern its shape and the uses of its land resources land subject to flood or incapable of being well drained may be de veloped into park areas flat dry stretches invite indus try hillier land may become a fine residential area in this way a town is divided by geography into areas the manner in which the areas are developed should be the result of careful study and regulation if the town is to be something more than a haphazard badly organ ized collection of houses and factory buildings town planning therefore is simply a realistic attempt to study the growth of cities towns and villages and to prevent unhealthy and inefficient development its aim is to provide better living conditions within a community for parrm only easter vacation report from parliament on easter jet your clothes be new or ele be sure vou will it rue oli english their fowl a number of farmers have been at work in their maple sugar bushes and have had very satisfactory runs david gray who has the john gray farm at ballantrae is one of the largest tappers having having some 350 trees runn ing leonard hoover of the sth concession of markham tapped about 150 trees making a supply of maple syruo and sugar for his own needs agriculture one of the most discussed subjects both in and out of parliament in ottawa is the serious economic plight of the canadian farmers there has not been much publicity about this and the people of canada generally are not aware that fanners are definitely getting the short end of the stick in the current boom the fact of the matter is that the cash income of farm ers is declining rapidly but because of the boom the costs of the things the farmer must buy to live and to keep a farm going are still going up government economists note but are not saying much about it i hat in actual dollars far mers all across the country are 20 worse off than they were four years ago quite obviously this affects the living standards of all farmers regardless of whether they depend for their living on a single crop such as wheat or on mixed farming and its pro ducts who is to blame 1 think it i is fair to say that the facts which have come out in the last few vears make it clear that there has been a lot of incompetence and many verv bad guesses made by the present government because the government has taken over the control of the farm economy it seems fair to judge the competence of the federal department of agriculture by the results of their controls i refer to such actions as the huge lasses to farmers through no fait of their own but solely because the gov ernment undertook to make international deals on prices- all of which have turned out to be bad deals the bungling of the foot ami mouth dis ease outbreak didnt help an either worse still all across has teen the handling of the british market for farm products whatever may be said in explanation the fact of the matter is that since the government first moved in and took over the job of mark eting our farm products in the united kingdom we have lost every one of these valu able markets for these and other reasons it seems to me that this farm problem is the most pressing single one in canada today i am glad to say that the party of which 1 am a member has verv defin ite plans for the restoration of these markets and vou will shortly be hearing a lot more about them budget drhntc on monday march li we saw the end of the budget debate with a vote taken on the subamendment proposed by the ccf and the amend ment proposed by the conser vatives both amendments were of course defeated by the lib eral government and a motion which was sponsored by the government of course carried because of the majority that the government has in the house over ninety members took part in the budget debate which lasted over three weeks the house is
