papers with miss lois marshall the cele brated young toronto soprano following lois marshall night at the board of educations final meeting of the year some excerpts from newspaper reports follow chairman herbert orliffe pre sented miss marshal with a bou quet oi orchids with the comment in your voice god has given you a thing of beauty he said that canada has produced its most outstanding singer miss elsie hutchinson who was lous marshalls teacher was intro duced by dr c c goldririg direc tor of education as typical of torontos good teachers who not only teach but encourage good attitudes and encourages pupils in the development of their gifts dr goldring congratulate miss hutchinson in the work she had done at the school and in first realizing that lois was worth training along vocal lines from 1933 to 1912 lois marsh all crippled by poliomyelitis at tended wellesley school miss hutchinson an accomplished pian ist used to accompany lois but she did more than that miss hutchinson encouraged lois when the girls spirits flagged a bit she and other teachers convinced the young singer as they try to con vince all polio victims that she would have to provide her own drive if she was to be a success miss hutchinson provided lois with considerable stimulus and urged her to go on with her sing ing newspapers recently acclaimed miss marshalls town hall debut in new york and she signed a threeyear contract with columbia artists it is satisfying to know that this girl who received all her musical education at the toronto royal conservatory of music will give concerts in the united states south america hawaii and many another distant place and wher ever she goes we have no doubt she will remember miss hutchin son one journalist has said of miss marshall the fact that she moves on the stage with difficulty may hamper her in opera this is not true in recital however her splendid voice and the uncommon skill with which she used it are all she needs perhaps if she had not suffered poliomyelitis lois alarshall would not have attended wellesley orthopedic class would not have met miss hutchinson and would not be canadas out standing singer mt
