himself into an improvised dark room he will complete the work there bob is a patient at variety vil- 1 lage on the outskirts of toronto a school for the incapacitated pro vided by the crippled childrens society to which the stouffville j lions club makes one of its prime contributions chiefly responsible for having this photography class set up at the school is evelyn andrus first woman president of the toronto j camera club the class receives weekly instruction and is produc- ing work of amazing quality as balanced against their disabilities it was more than three years ago that miss andrus noting the work being done at variety vil lage in training handicapped boys and casually hearing of the need for interesting hobbies to fill in spare time offered to conduct a photographic class each week ninety per cent of the students wanted to join but because of space limitations it was possible to take only a fraction of the wouldbe entrants and each week since then with very rare exceptions miss andrus has conducted the boys through initial stages of training with their advice and assistance has contrived many gadgets to over come some specific disability has displayed rare patience while insisting the proper photographic cleanliness be observed in all pro cessing work many amateurs do not know that tongs used for mmmjrlm developing a print should never touch tiie fixing solution but the variety village boys do and ob serve that and many other rules of good technique one former graduate of the village who took up photography as a hobby under miss andrus now has a parttime job in a studio augmenting his earnings from his regular trade supply houses photographic associations and individuals have been very generous to the class in the matter of equipment and sup plies miss andrus donates her time a washroom is taken over for a darkroom and the great out doors around the village is the studio there is even talk that some day in the future the class might have its own fully equipped darkroom in the meantime the boys dont worry they have a fas cinating hobby and something to bloomington december 21 a very happy christmas and blessed new year to the editor
