and altona united missionary church for nearly six years rev and mrs h s haliman bade farewell to their many friends here this past weekend on friday afternoon a joint pic nic of the stouffville and altona sunday schools was held in the stouffville park with over 350 in attendance a happy time of games was enjoyed by the children and young people followed by a picnic supper a presentation was made to rev and mrs haliman a gift of money to show in a small way the appreciation for their services rev and mrs gibson brown were also in attendance and he spoke fitting words of farewell the services on sunday saw the church well filled morning and evening with the night service be ing rev hallmans final address the local christiancongregational church witli their pastor rev muir joined in the service rev and mrs haliman and fam ily moved to their new pastorate at kitchener on monday of this week a welcome is extended to rev and mrs huson from toronto who have come to stouffville to councillor with visiting the department of highways and upsetting the work of the road committee a resolu tion was read by reeve timbers asking councillor lemasurier to explain why he did not tell the truth when asked if he had visited the highways department councillor lemasurier stoutly denied ever being to the highways department mr mcginnis of the depart ment will take his oath that you were in four miles south of stouffville was the winner of the lucky farmer photo quiz in the tribune last week the farm con taining 80 acres of land belonged to the late peter pike and was the childhood home of the wellknown jacob abram and isaac pike and the late mrs bryson johnson mother of russell and wm john son on the ninth concession the farm was purchased by the present owners father mr wm h thomas from the late jacob pike in 1911 over forty years ago i local member visits town hollis e beckett local member of the provincial legislature visit ed in stouffville on wednesday dining a brief tour of his riding of east york whitchurch tax collection up 10000 over last year tax collections in the township of whitchurch are approximately 10000 ahead of collections at this time last year according to infor mation given council at the regular meeting on saturday afternoon taxes collected this year to date total s5s5s3m final payment amounting to s7s203 was authorized saturday to arthur mcllroy secretary of ss no 1 whitchurch for pay ment to the architect of the new school in that section an account was passed for pay ment for oil dust layer this year amounting to s650s20 the road superintendents accounts also con tained s1s753g for a new weed spraying machine recently deliver ed and now at work on township roadsides there was some discussion con cerning a disagreement which arose over oil being placed on the roadside in front of the cedar valley store operated by mr bol ton mr bolton it appeared re quested some oil in front of his premises and mr chapman oper ator of the pine orchard store immediately put in a similar re quest however by this time the oil truck had left whitchurch and calcium was placed on the pine orchard store front both men agreed to pay for their dust layer councillor legge stated that he would recommend in future that calcium be given and paid for at cost wherever such requests crop up 1 have no objections stated reeve mclaughlin but we might find ourselves faced with a lot of requests council all agreed that the store keepers who had received the benefit should pay for this years dust layer but calcium only would be used in doing such off the beat jobs in future dumped refuse on road road supt davis revealed that a trucker had dumped a quantity of refuse plaster stones boards bricks etc along two hundred ft of the bethesda sideroad through investigation the provincial police located the driver of the truck at agincourt rather than have the man appear in court he was allow ed to settle and paid s20c0 into the municipality who had had to send road men to clean up the mess council agreed to a trip over the municipal roads on tuesday of this week ballantrae hamlet rallies to public school picnic stouffville community centre board which administers the affairs of memorial park came in for considerable criticism at the regular meeting of the chamber of commerce on thursday even ing concerning their action in making a fixed charge on picnic- groups it was stated that ixuh out side and local groups were being called on to pay as much as s1500 a letter of protest was agreed upon and will include protests from the business professional womens club and the lions club while it was agreed that the board was within its legal right to make a charge members stated that considerable business was del rived from these visiting picnic parties and a charge might tend toj drive them away from town it was argued that most municipal parks i are kept up without charge to those who use them president ken wagg told the meeting that he understood several local picnic groups had gone elsewhere when asked to pay this included mark ham eastern star which has a number of members in stouffville another group it was said who fre quently hold a strawberry social had had to cancel their affair be cause of the charge members of the chamber of commerce ex pressed the feeling that the board members should have discussed the proposed move to charge with the organizations they represent before taking the action it was stated that heretofore many groups had taken up a col lection for the caretaker when extra work was required however it was now believed that the care taker was on annual salary and did not require these handouts mr keith middlemiss the cham ber of commerce representative on the board was not present to 3nswer the criticism at the end of the regular term the past few years ballantrae pub- ballantrae public school grounds lie school has grown in attendance were the scene of a large scale com munity picnic as over 22f parents students and residents gathered to gether to take part in an afternoon of sports and entertainment in until it was necessary to build a new 50000 addition which was completed last year at the close of the school term there were ul students attending the school but the attendance is expected to in crease over the 100 mark in the fall a third teacher miss ann stalter of markham will be added to the staff of mrs robt windsor and mrs willis hoover during the picnic celebrations a presenta tion of a coftee table and a trilight floor lamp was made to the form
