spied for the second time the big lxx of silk green screen prints in the classroom it was a dilferent thrill from the first time when they had no idea what that big box con tained this time they knew the surprise was in the pictures them selves last time because it was a new venture for us all members of the community club took charge of the choosing and hanging of the prints this time the children took over the job miss hennessey re ports they willingly devoted a noon hour to the event with un usual enthusiasm it was not possible to hang all the pictures the first week so for the second showing favourites had to be chosen and decisions made all over again three unanimously re mained through the second week and were sadly put away at the end of the show northern river by tom thomson yvonne hous- sers evening and wild geese these with their wild stillness quiet peace and action of birds in flight especially delighted the children twice this year our school has had an exhibit from the circulat ing library of the toronto art gallery and twice we have seen that the children have loved the pictures but what else has this experiment proven for they must be more than just decoration miss hennessey tells us that while the prints are there the childrens compositions are a joy to read they need new words to describe what they see and how they feel so they search for and find a new vocabulary their imagination is given a new exercise and through the familiar scenes they are led to the unfamiliar ones and must try to imagine what led the artist to paint his subject one picture eterans of the sea a group of old fishermen relaxing in the quiet of their retirement led to many yarns wound about the fixing of nets the boasting of a sons accomplish ments tales of fishing and the sea the children thought would be retold when fishing days were over the older children held open discussion on all the pictures they gave their likes and dislikes their reasons and their ideas miss hennessey just sat back and let them go to it and she told us she was amazed at their choices and criticism and the little ones they love colour if it is bright they love it if it isnt they dont but all are seeing the paintings of their own countrymen in this very age in which they live the results of monday nights euchre winners were mrs gor don spring of milliken jean carr
