rearing of healthy fullgrown mink horsemeat liver and fish are used in large quanti ties the mink are fed once a day with the females receiving approx imately 3 ounces and the males 4 the horse meat is purchased by the ton with mink consuming over twenty tons a year horse meat is priced at 10c per pound with each animal requiring about fifteen dollars wortli of this per year during the past years the cost of food has taken a sharp increase with certain food stuffs being doubled in price mr farmer assisted by his seventeen year old son paul dishes out the ingred ients late in the afternoon with the food being placed on top of the wire cages mr farmer raises three varie ties of mink the standard breed resembling the wild mink pas- teles a brown coloured animal and the silver blue breed mr farmer has paid as high as 250 for pastele males but believes that the sapphires are the up and com ing mink on the market at the present time they are in good demand with pelts selling at up to 300 a piece it takes some seventy pelts to make one full sized coat pelting is regarded as the fine art of the business the animals are killed with cyanide gas and skinned the fat is removed and in most cases shipped to a manu facturer where it is used as a base for cosmetics the pelt must be taken off with as little knife dam age as possible the first cut is made between the hind legs and the skin is slipped off like an over coat the knife must be used to cut out the feet eyes and nose thfl killing and pelting must be done when fur is prime which is usually in the month of november the pelts are stored in cold stor age until scraping boarding and drying can be done for boarding and trimming operations the pelts are stretched inside out over an oblong board where extra bits of hair and flesh are cut off the boarded pelts are put in a warm place to dry scraping is done in a cooler place so that the fat wont run when dry the boards are removed and the pelts are graded and shipped in bundles to fur auctions in toronto new york and montreal the thriving business which got its start from a mere hobby has not been accomplished without hard work and worry the feeding cleaning watering and pelting are all important factors in the raising of this costly fur bearing animal from early morning till late at night alvin s farmer of gormley may be seen attending his hobby a business of which he may be justly proud ml pisgah ss no 0 school board meets every third monday of each month the wa meeting at the home of mrs pauerden will be held on wednesday feb 13 devotions will be given
