her more votes than a sitting mem ber of newmarket council and yet failed to get her a seat election results dec 1 gave lome paynter 70s votes frank bowser 701 and mrs mcxaughton 701 mrs mcxaughton asked for a recount which was completed thursday and gave her 711 votes but mr bowser 715 though she was still behind mr bowser in the count mrs mc xaughton was now three votes ahead of mr paynter technically she is entitled to a seat on council but legally she cannot claim it be cause the municipal act specifies thau recount can only involve two candidates mrs mcxaughton cannot now ask for a recount against mr pay nter as the legal time limit of 14 days for application has expired what f actually wanted she explained was a recount of the whole election there were only 21 votes separating the last six cand idates and i was sure there would have been some changes i might even have ended in third place the whole town is seething with the strange turn of events many want mrs mcxaughton seated on council present council members are in a quandary some say she could be appointed to council if mr paynter resigns some say not xo one seems quite sure what to do or what can be done in this unpre cedented case mrs mcxaughton though some what chagrined at the turn of events says she doesnt want to put the town to the expense of another election she feels it wouldnt be right by the tax payers then also she doesnt overlook the possibility that a second recount might give mr paynter a few additional votes as well and thus readjust the bal ances thrown out of line by the first recount mr bowser asked for a recount against mr paynter where mrs mcxaughton applied for a recount against him he was told that the municipal act forbade such a recount mr mcxaughton who lost by five votes in her first try for coun cil last year is silent on her future plans she intends to keep council in the dark between 11501 and 1609 2000 frenchmen of roble birth fell in duels as recently as two
