reelected by acclamation at the nomination meeting for uxbridge township held in the hall at good wood on friday afternoon dec 22nd the other members of the 1951 council will be luther booth john a ball and bruce beach eight candidates nominated for the oflice of school trustee will go to the polls on monday jan 1st toi contest trie five seats on the school j board polling hours are from 9 am to 5 pm j stewart ball was nominated for reeve but withdrew his name at i the meeting in favour of reeve catherwood other names nomin ated for councillors were ralph faulkner wendell alcock horace johnston walter t beach and stewart ball who failed to qualify for the oflice of trustees for the twp school area the following qualified william hewlett henry slack lemuel pickett kenneth minard wilbert byam walter beach eldred catherwood and norman hall earl tindall and edgar johnston were nominated but were disqualified because of absence farmed in markham dies at age of 93 david gillham who farmed the greater part of his lifetime in markham township passed away on sunday dec 24th at the home of his son milton in leaskdale at the age of 93 he was twice mar ried his first wife being amanda ash who predeceased him forty- four years ago he is survived by his widow alberta hisey there are also three sons george allis- ton milton leaskdale and john toronto also a brother louis king and a sister mrs henry johnson lemonville the funeral on wednesday of this week was conducted from the dixon funeral home markham with interment in the dicksons hill cemetery christmas dinner guests at the home of mr and mrs ross winter- stein included mrs robert winter- stein and miss nora macklem and mr and mrs bruce winterstein and jean and kent mr and mrs geo storey were in hamilton at the loney home for christmas may we take this occasion to express our ap preciation of your patronage during the year now coming to a close we trust that this yuletide season has brought you an abundance of those things you hold dear to your heart may the new year be a happy and prosperous one in pattern which of the good days fellowship ahead shall set the building bylaw mooted for uxbridge township speaking at the annual uxbridge township nominations at good wood hall last friday afternoon ralph faulkner member of last years council and renominated stated uxbridge twp is 100 years old council meetings took place in several buildings one was the bultalo house he stated but i havent been able to find out where that was located mr faulkner added that if the old council remained in oflice they would pass i building bylaw to regulate building according to specifications reeve catherwood called atten tion to the fact there would be a lady member attending county council in 1951 as mrs mackenzie was elected reeve of beaverton he referred to the expenditure by the county of ontario of 850000 on a new home being built for the aged with the city of oshawa paying some 33 of building cost as well as a share of the upkeep he stated the government is agitating this twp school area to which the council agreed a grant of 300 is made for each section which amounts to 3000 for the 12 soliool sections reeve catherwood stated he had discuss ed the school area problem with representatives of ontario and simcoe they find it more econ omical to operate under the now setup the rate of the school that didnt come in is higher the reeve added and continued we have decided to form a public school area in the township of uxbridge and see how it pans out if the people are dissatisfied we can and may change it were not trying to put anything over you deputy reeve bert tindall spoke about the new township truck which he declared was costing us about 5500 a voice inquired are they turning in the old truck bert xo the jjeputyreeve replied theyre giving us 10s5 off without about the same as the old truck- wed have been practically giving it away thats the reason we kept it clerk treasurer ashenhurst clarified the deputyreeves state ment costing us about 5500 with the explanation the price of the truck is 11000 and the gov ernment pays 50 mr tindall also referred to the fact 1800 had been cut ofr the highway appropriation this year by the dept of highways which curtailed councils plans for road improvement he stated they had been forced to spend a lot of money on repairing the maintainerl and hiring equipment for snowj plowing as the townships was useless councillor alcock regretted he had missed many important meet ings during the year owing to ill health snow removal cost the township 3570 last year councillor faulk ner stated with a total of 1851270 spent on roads 50 of which is recoverable from the government we all know taxes are high we all have cars we have to have roads councillor booth declared me hoped the purchase of the new truck would save considerably on maintenance costs mr booth stated it was his first year on council four bulldozers were used to open roads last winter the reeve reported at a cost of 10 to 12 an hour reeve baxter of scott township was present and voiced this com plaint regarding county roads we do not get efficient expenditure for the money we spend on township roads i advocate turning all roads back on the municipality i think our whole county system needs re building i dont like to waste public money reeve baxter brought greetings from scott township stewart ball stated he didnt agree with reeve born at bethesda eightyfour years ago following an attack of pneu monia and a brief illness of scarce ly a week mrs sarah meed passed away at her residence at peaches corners 7th con markham on dec 22nd the late mrs meed was born at bethesda 81 years ago but moved to markham where she has resided for the last 23 years daughter of mr and mrs daniel b shalter she was married to robt meed in march 1901 her maiden name was sarah ann shaffer mrs mood kis a regular atten dant at wideman church where she taught a sunday school class for many years besides her husband the late mrs meed is survived by one brother abraham of bethesda and a sister mrs peter brillinger adchiine living in gormley the funeral service was held from her late residence on sunday afternoon at 2 oclok thence to wideman mennonite church fori public service at 230 the service was conducted by messrs a d grove and oscar burkholder of breslau interment was made at wideman cemetery markham tlie pallbearers were carl reesor gordon reio george hoover allan lewis russell grove and edwin bver new schedule of telephone rates a new schedule of rates effect ing those telephone exchanges of the woodbridge vaughan co recently taken over by the bell system will become effective on jan 1st while there is no increase in the local b s telephone rates the local company has published the new bell rates in the interests of local customers who have occasion to use the former wood- bridge vaughan exchanges the new schedule appears on page 6 of this issue mrs glenna abell of toronto private diaries davis and wife of camj borden spent their christ mas holiday with their parents mr and mrs dawson davis mr and mrs ken klinck of otterville spent christinas at ho klincks large christmas gatherings in markham homes two of the largest family gather ings this christmas were in mark ham homes at edwin byers on the 8th concession thirtythree guests sat down to dinner on christmas day and twentyfour gathered around the same table for the evening meal three tur keys were required to satisfy the yuletide appetites this is the largest family gettogether at this wellknown home in some years mr earl strong of brantford came the furthest distance on the holi day a little farther south at the home of mrs a ferrier in mt joy a jamily gathering of twenty- five enjoyed the holiday feast and consumed a twentytwo pound bird mrs ferrier had six children ten grandsons and two grand daughters with her for christmas five candidates seeking election in whitchurch tp iirin which they wouldnt have j county roads should be passed public hearing on bylaw next week a public hearing before the ontario municipal board on the new land restrictions bylaw in whitchurch township is schedul ed for the vandorf hall next wed nesday jan 3rd at 1030 am a copy of the bylaw has been mailed to each ratepayer in the township and any clauses which are objectionable will be aired at next wednesdays meeting whitchurch already has a build ing bylaw in force governing the erection of buildings the new law when approved will govern baxter that the cutting up of lots number of given otherwise that amounted to j continued on back page dwellings which may be placed on a given area etc ivan mclaughlin received the reeveship of whitchurch town ship and fred timbers the deputy- rceveship by acclamation at the annual nomination meeting ticld in the vandorf hall on friday afternoon the move up the muni- cipal ladder by these two council members was prompted by the retirement of reeve edw logan who has served whitchurch for eleven years the remaining three council seats are being contested by five candidates sid legge and r c baycroft members of council last year and threp nev aspirants to office delos graham j a carke and e l mccarron mr graham and mr claike are wellknown township fanners while mr mccarron while hold ing an important position in a tor onto concern is also farming n whitchurch the race has stimu lated considerable interest and a considerable vote is predicted at the polls next monday proviiing thu weather is favorable ruck ives acclamation reeve ivan mclaughlin whitchurch candidate stresses need for more industrial expansion the vandorf hall was comfort ably filled on friday afternoon for the annual nomination meeting of whitchurch township reeve logan who last week announced his retirement from municipal oflice addressed the gathering and summarized the high points dur ing the century of municipal government celebrated bv the township this fall he called atten tion to the downward trend of the townships county tax lew and improvements made and those pending on the county roads with in the municipality mr logan stated that he would recommend to the incoming coun cil that they look with favor upon the- request of the oak ridge3 lions club to be permitted to purchase certain tax land within the township for park purposes ivan mclaughlin deputyreeve spoke of his work in connection with his position as a com missioner for the county home for the aged he revealed that fortyfive men and thirtyone women are being cared for at this institution mr mclaughlin pointed out the favorable decision in the recent county equalized assessment case which dropped the whitchurch assessment by more than a half million dollars the deputyreeve stated that he would support the new land restrictions bylaw jecently passed and scheduled for a public hearing before the muni cipal board early in january councillor fred timbers in charge of the townships road pro gram in 1950 told the ratepayers that the roads were wearing out faster than they could be built and noted the fact that three gravel pit companies were oper ating near the township i would like to see a larger grant from the government to help us with these roads or we may have to resort to collecting busi ness tax to offset the damage done by so many gravel trucks said mr timbers mr timbers told his audience that approximately 2000 had been spent in completing a good job on the north townline between the 7th and 8th concession nine to 10 miles of road had been oiled this past summer and sixty tons of calcium used thirteen to fourteen miles of ditching had been done with the townships own equip ment and 11000 yards of gravel laid down councillor sid legge reviewed the police situation and added that the incoming council would be faced with engaging another officer one having resigned in september mr legge pointed to the strides made in providing a new uptodate office building in whitchurch something which was long over due councillor r- c baycroft also touched on road matters and stressed the fact that it might be necessary to raise the 50000 road budget even higher if better roads were continually demanded mr delos graham and mr j a clarke both nominated for the office of council told the ratepayers that they intended to stand for council and would endeavor to give their best if elected e j mccarron also nominated for a council seat told the gather ing that whitchurch would con tinue to have many problems be cause of its proximity to toronto no speaker yet he said has offered to suggest any new avenue of taxation to take care of these mounting costs he proposed that industry should be coaxed to locate in whitchurch to alleviate the tax burden the tourist trade too was one on which the township was losing out were meeting 1950 expendi tures on an 1s50 revenue basis he added mr mccarron urged his listeners to get out and vote on monday the reason so few people in europe today havent the right to vote is because they didnt use the privilege when they did have it farmers he stated were paying seventyfive per cent of the taxes in whitchurch he advocated seasonal rate payers meetings so that problems could be talked over with the council earle toole newly appointed member of the york county road commission and former township reeve spoke briefly and paid glow ing tribute to the work of john crawford whitchurch clerk who has held this position for sixteen vears subscribers are reminded that the tribune will be published one day later next week owing to the new year holiday
