established business in town many a difficult situation has been met and overcome since james h ratclift father of the present proprietor began business december 10th 1890 known at that time as the pantry and located in the todd block in the west end of town it was j h ratcliff who retailed the first imported fruit and vegetables in the village the policy of the firm through the years has been to deal honestly keep abreast of the times in service price and equipment and as a strictly locallyowned enterprise accept the responsibility in the building up of the community life of the district from an article in the special edition of the stouftville free press of 1895 we quote you cannot buy cotton or boots at the pantry whose very name suggests all sorts of delicious and wholesome food but you can buy anything that has legitimate place in a well stocked grocery few men can do many things well the proprietor of the pantry believes in doing at least one thing well he keeps a good grocery in 1903 mr john w ratcliff came to town to join his brother in the firm j w ratcliff extended the business throughout the rural district and had many a story to tell of road conditions and long weary days spent with wagon or sleigh in getting the goods to the consumer and picking up their butter and eggs the partnership of the brothers continued until their retirement early in 1941 when the business was taken over by the present owner f glenn ratcliff at the end of the first great war the premises in the west end were found to be too small so the present location downtown was secured
