one of the latest additions to the clippers senior hockey squad is earl mccrone a real hustler mccrone played his last seasons hockey with akron ohio in the international league southern division a new hockey league opened their triple schedule in the stouff- vllle arena on saturday morning the toronto oil company league comprising six clubs will play a doubleheader every saturday morning throughout the winter commencing at 10 am teams are sponsored by the several big oil companies we notice a number of people commenting on the size of the new goal crease that is nqw a must under the caha rules crease instead of ending at the goal posts now extends three feet on each side idea behind the extended crease is to give the goalie more protection and to stop offensive players standing off the side of trie net many goals have been scored from there in previous seasons coach larry molyneux former new york ranger reports 12 of last years newmarket spitfires are available for ice duty this winter the list includes two netminders two uefenscmen and eight for wards newcomers appearing at the practice sessions held during the past week are dennis labine former parry sound intermediate george holborn and jim taylor last season with sutton green- shirts and joe magani a defense- man from bradford we always figured that bill mor rison of oshawa was one of the best hockey officials to ever handle a game in the stouffville arena we were pleased to see that he has been elevated to the position of referee with the national hockey league he handled a game last week in chicago the first time he has done so to our knowledge bill broke into the big time last fall as a linesman after having handled memorial cup and allen cup finals for the caha he was sent by the caha in the spring of 191 to officiate at all the mem orial cup final games played that year in manitoba he handled eight games in all we believe as one ended in a tie his ability as a whistle tooter soon attracted the attention of clarence campbell the president of the nhl and he was signed to an nhl contract during his first season following a new practice instituted by presi dent campbell he served his apprenticeship as a linesman to accustom himself to nhl crowds players and procedure before taking the big step george sayliss is nursing a sore leg and was used rather sparingly on saturday night to
