sun day morning oct sth from a heart attack mary had suffered from heart trouble since she was a small girl and had missed most of the final term of school hist year be cause of poor health recently however she had a checkup which showed she was improved she attended public and high schools at claremont being a gifted student in grade xi of the high school this year of which mrs kenneth laushway of stouirville is princi pal on friday last mary had attend ed the joint field day and had permission to take part in less strenuous events being twice a winner in bhllthrowing entries and she kept records also that day on saturday she had enjoyed a happy day at markham fair and it was felt her unexpected passing within five minutes of the attack was probably due to too much excitement the late mary story was identi fied with claremont baptist churchy and funeral services were conducted on tuesday afternoon oct 10th from the family home by her pastor rev mr davison eight boys students of the claremont high school acted as pallbearers and interment was made in clare mont union cemeterv surviving are marys parents mr and mrs cecil story a brother andrew at home two sisters jean of toronto on iceland the con veners also conducted some very interesting contests during the business period rev and mrs lackey offered their home for the next meeting to be held on mon day evening nov g it was last saturday in novem ber keep this date in mind at the close of the meeting a dainty lunch was served by the hostess the willson thanksgiving family reunion on monday saw over thirty members of the clan sit down to dinner in the town ship hall mr and mrs donald willson who are now living on the homestead on the 5th con provided the dinner mr don willson has just recently purchased the old family attended a recep tion at the home of mrs t l wil son and present a handbag to mrs mitchell who is leaving whitevale to live with a daughter in toronto for a number of years mrs mitchell had been superintendent of the of the united church sunday i school in whitevale in my last report i informed you that the next one would pertain to the county of ontario of which the township of pickering is a part the county has an estimated population of 43472 and comprises approximately 49108 acres the total assessment of all rateable land and properties in 1950 amounted to 40522s35 and there are only 44952 in outstand ing debentures which will be retired in three years the county comprises 11 town ships 3 villages 2 towns and the city of oshawa the latter of course being not assessable by the county but which on the other hand contributes in the form of grants etc in part to the overall expense and administration of the county there are 25 members on the county council who have a com bined total of 29 votes the pick ering township members of the council are your reeve and deputy- reeve each of whom has two votes there are 1 seven standing committees and 2 six special committees as follows 1 xgriculture and reforesta tion county property and print ing finance and assessment education and welfare roads and bridges commissioners of county home board of audit 2 ajax annexation assess ment and equalization county home building committee county representatives of childrens aid society and city of oshawa osh awa road surburban committee the warden of the county is automatically ex officio a member of all committees the county has approximately 1400 acres under reforestation in uxbridge township which will prove to be a very valuable project in a few years already 8000 board feet of lumber have been cut as well as several cords of wood as a result of thinning the county council assume responsibility for the care and maintenance of all county build ings in the town of whitby these comprise the county home the registry office the county court house which embraces the council chambers the various offices and the gaol there is also the repon- sibihty of looking after the child rens aid the juvenile court hos pitalization education and provid ing ministerial services for ah of the people in the home for the aged the county council is also responsible for the building and maintenance of all bridges and approaches having a span of over 10 feet anywhere in the county also all county roads of which pickering township has approx imately 21 miles comprising the brock road and all of the 9th concession the proportion of the taxes which pickering township diverts to the county is at present set at 07s mills and will amount to a total of 5035912 barton widow of the late david urquhart passed away at her home in ux bridge on sunday sept 24th in her 77th year the funeral took place to foster memorial cemetery on tuesday sept 26th services being conducted at her late residence by rev l e atkinson and rev b eyre the deceased was a member of trinity united church uxbridge the late elizabeth ann barton was born in scott twp in 1s73 a daughter of the late joseph barton and rachel veitch and married david urquhart in 1902 for many years they farmed on the 6th con cession of scott until 1921 when they retired to uxbridge to live where her
