germany for their inhuman actions the council also expressed through the clerk their happiness at the anticipated visit of their majesties king george vi and queen elizabeth the seriousness of the unem ployment situation continuing into 1939 caused the members of the council considerable concern they passed several motions dealing particularly with the lack of work for the youth of the country and suggesting the establishment of youth training centres to provide food clothing recreation and voca tional training thus endorsing the plan set forth by the canadian corp association in addition the county council requested the pro vincial government to pass legis lation whereby the fullest advan tage could be obtained by a work for wages policy to alleviate unemployment throughout ontario and assist at the same time in restoring to many of the citizens their morale and measure of inde pendence which they had suffered the loss of through the demoraliz ing system of direct relief which had been in vogue in canada dur ing the past ten years their majesties king george vi of england and queen elizabeth visited toronto and the county of york during their tour of canada in may 1939 wednesday afternoon after being stricken with a heart attack at newmarket his home was on highway no 28 six miles south of peterborough his death came in newmarket while there in con nection with his duties as an inspector of stallions with the ontario department of agricul ture he was serving in 10 counties from hastings in the east to sim- coe in the west mr staples was a lifelong resi dent of this district and graduated in animal husbandry from the ontario agriculture college he also took a course at peterborough business college in 1919 he was nominated as a candidate of the united farmers of ontario in the east durham county riding he became one of the youngest members ever to be elected to the legislature mr staples became one of the most prominent farmers in the dis trict and was a progressive breeder of fine jersey cattle and also a breeder of horses he was promin ent in fall fairs and was a director of the royal winter fair he was also chairman of the breeding horse committee at the royal for five years before retiring from the position five years ago he had served as a director at peter borough exhibition and was a one time secretarymanager of mill- brook fair he was interested in numerous other fall fairs and often served as a judge mr staples was a member of peterborough jersey breeders association an honorary member of peterborough kinsmen club and a steward at springville jjnited church several years ago mr staples was assigned by the hunter horse society of canada as a participant in the breeding of fine horses in cooperation with the society
