blades and hickory it seems a bit early to think of boys donning the pads when the baseball season is still with us but since it is the most popular local sport no doubt it is already on everybodys mind at the home of carl sellers the mark- ham squad got together for a night of corn roasting and enjoyment no definite plans have been drawn together by any means although a team seems to be in the making once again the old trouble of where do we play has cropped up and the boys must face the facts that their home arena will not be available newmarket rink has been considered but is incon venient for both players and fans alike the hockey talent around this community is on the increase and it seems too bad that a greater majority of the boys cannot prove their worth semifinal won by buttonville suffered their first defeat of the current oasa series at union- ville on saturday afternoon after taking a lead the sluggers fell down badly to have the last years champs come from behind to edge them 118 stunden went the full nine innings for the local squad and hurled fine ball all the way although at times his support proved unusually weak two costly errors in the outfield by rumney and blundell followed by two more in the infield allowed the visitors to pull up even and go three runs up buttonville never rallied and so must win the next two games to take the series if they can come through no doubt the going will be somewhat easier as cooksville were the oasa champions last year buttonvilles line up was as follows p stunden c clement 1st j rumney 2nd mills 3rd j watson short nicholson if g rumney cf b watson rf blun dell softball by jim thomas buttonville wins local softball championship the fourth concession sluggers have again repeated their per formances of last season as they downed their second place rivals in three straight games the unionville club put up a good battle but it was easy to see that buttonville was the better team they have one of the best pitchers in the league with stunden on the mound and clement back of the plate being a tower of strength on the team bill hoods boys scored two runs in the first and added a couple in the second to take a 40 lead going into the fifth union ville showed signs of getting bach in the game as blundell perkins and cox loaded the bases but stunden settled down to take out the next twq batters and the third was tagged on a perfect play at the plate over again in the sixth innings the sixth concession squad loaded the sacks on a smashing double by minton a hit by wolfe and a single from the bat of blundell all three runners were batted in to pull back into the running in their next turn at bat nick and bob bangay rose to the occasion with singles followed with a hit by stunden these three players crossed the plate to end the scoring cox went all the way for unionville buttonville downs thornhill playing before a good sunday crowd at thornhill buttonville smashed their way to a 2is victory over the younger yonge street boys afterbeing held scoreless in the first innings the sluggers settled down for seven runs on the second and eight in the fourth thornhill never came close al though they did show a little form in the 6th scoring five runs stun den lasted until the seventh when blundell unionvilles contribu tion to the team came in to hurl errorless ball so blinding was his speed that batter after batter wilt ed away with the bats on their shoulders jack watson who had gone hitless for the first part of the contest unwound himself to line a homer into the outfield in the second game run off at unionville the same story was repeated as thornhill proved no match for the homesters clement blundell and nicholson homered to win the contest 213 rumney hurled for buttonville with clement on the receiving end nicholson and blundell who were called from unionvilles team and mark mills from agincourt have fitted in well with the sluggers doug james handled the games nothing but an exhibi tion contest sunderland winning 12 both teams have complained of the umpiring in the four games played to date and it was agreed that outside league umpires should be brought in for this fifth and deciding contest just why the special umps didnt appear is not clear but apparently a slipoff somewhere the date of a replay of the game was not yet known tuesday new hunting law permits gun per man one hunter one gun is a new regulation in the voluminous set of rules laid down for those who go after game birds this fall there are other changes in the oiderincouncil issued by the resources department covering the migratory birds but the aver age hunter will find his season and daily bag limits about the same as last year the orders are so complex that no generalization of them is pos sible for they vary in each pro vince and in each meticulously- laidout section of each province the wise hunter will have to check his own district regulations before being safe from the game ring wood i mrs james ogilvy daughters caroline and susan and little son jamie were holidaying with her parents at new liskeard for two weeks returning on sunday even ing mr and mrs ed lawrenson brunswick is cut from eight to four and from 100 to 50 for the season j there are new regulations cov ering the killing of loons in que bec great blackbacked gulls in saguenay county and newfound land american and redbreasted mergansers in newfoundland the maritime provinces ontario and british columbia these birds a menace to fish conservation will be killed only under permit here tofore they have been subject to a fairly open season the new regulations are effective sept 1 1950 seasonal dates are only slightly changed largely to offset the fact that oct 1 falls on a sunday the rule against multigun carriers is humanitarian and in the interests of conservation officials said the habit of carrying two or more loaded guns enabled hunters to fire a large number of shells in quick succession with the result that many birds were hit when nearly out of range beyond possibility of retrieving it caused unnecessary waste and suffering the one gun carried may not be loaded with more than three cart ridges no more than two in the magazine with one in the barrel sound mr ross lee who has lived in new york city for the past 28 years spent last friday with his cousin roy grove miss ada barkey
