green river the death occurred at ballantrae on friday aug 11th of charles leslie carter native of cherry- wood but who had spent the most of his life at green river although only fiftyfour years of age he was forced to retire from the farm a little more than a year ago due to ill health and moved to ballan trae deceased was a son of benjamin and mary carter in 1922 he was united in marriage with prosecu tions for the safety of pedestrians mrs reuben rrawson passes in 85th year funeral services for the late mrs mary rawson were held on saturday afternoon aug 12th in the claremont united churcn conducted by rev harold lackie with interment in union cemetery claremont pall bearers were thomas gregg john beeiby william palmer harold dickinson fred pugh and walter ward all of claremont the late mrs rawson was born on the 9th of pickering 84 years ago the daughter of david and mary mcfarlane in 1891 she was married to reuben r rawson m they farmed on the 1th concession of uxbridge township following her husbands death in 1925 mrs rawson moved to claremont she had remarkable health for her age and cared for her own home until last easter at which time she went to live with her daughter at moores falls in haliburton where she passed away on thurs day aug 10th the late mrs raw- son suffered from arthritis the deceased was identified with the womens missionary society of claremont united church and previously of the presbyterian church she is survived by two sons dr donald s rawson professor in the university at saskatoon and robert 1 rawson head gardener of the ontario hospital at st thomas and one daughter mrs s shaver may of moores falls and eight grandchildren two brothers lohn mcfarlane of cal ifornia and david mcfarlane of british columbia also survive mr james mccreight of stouffville is a nephew plans progressing for whitchurch centennial plans are steadily going ahead for the forthcoming whitchurch township centennial celebration on sept 16th and 17th every effort is being made by the com mittees to make this memorable event an occasion that will be remembered for many years to come the historical committee has almost completed the collection of data and photographs throughout the township to be published in booklet form ready for distribu tion on sept 16th the booklet it is hoped will lend a fitting back ground to the historical event to be celebrated this committee is also preparing to give historical recognition to aurora newmarket and stouffville by public address system during the motor cavalcade which is part of the saturday festivities centred at cedar beach musselmans lake the sunday mass service will be in the newmarket arena and fuller announcement concerning the details of this service will be announced later dressmaker here forty years ago the death occurred in toronto this week following a lengthy ill ness of mrs sarah rich chapell who will be remembered by many of our elder residents as a dress maker in stouffville some forty years ago deceased was the former sarah howard and was born on the 7th concession of markham township mr rich was employed as a paper hanger in both stouffville and markham the couple lived here for a number of years on market street and over huntleys store some years ago she married james chapell who has also pre deceased her surviving is one daughter mrs ida leonard grandsons bill and howard leonard and grand daughters margaret mrs c brown and gertrude mrs r rice the funeral on thursday will be conducted from the chapel of mcdougall brown toronto with interment in the stouffville ceme tery mother of wedknown local family passes in hospital following some six years of fail ing health the last twelve days of which were spent in hospital mrs ambrose stover passed away in brierbush hospital on monday aug 1lth a private funeral ser vice conducted by rev h hall- man was held at the residence on mill sfeet on wednesday aug 16th followed by public service in the united missionary church with interment in stouffville cemetery pall bearers were harvey schell levi forsyth fred pugh paul boadway reginald stouffer and lloyd wideman the late mrs stover was born at dicksons hill 57 years ago she was the former lovina raymer daughter of peter raymer and sarah catharine dresser raymer thirtyeight years ago she was united in marriage with albert ambrose stover who is well known throughout the entire district as proprietor of the stouff ville bakery and who survives her for a very short time the couple lived in markham and tor onto but practically all their married life has been spent in stouffville the deceased lived a very qujet life devoted to making a good home for her husband and family she is survived by two sons harry w of stouftville and f bruce of belleville and four daughters mrs jack spang velma mrs howard ratcliff gladys mrs donald brown norma of hamilton and mrs delos brown margaret of colborne four brothers also sur vive mrs stover arthur chester and roy raymer of toronto and elmer of richville and three sisters mrs orville brillinger ella of pine orchard mrs ken mills viola of newmarket and mrs fox alma of malton mennonite carrying about 200 and his empty wallet and broken glasses were discovered with the car questioning greenes friends police discovered that mrs reason a former student of greenes had also vanished new tree plan cuts down waste in planting a new onthespot advisory system of tree distribution to private landowners by the ontario dept of lands and forests is expected to pay big dividends in cutting down wastage under the new plan which was first tried out last year trees for planting next spring must be ordered by august 15 so that department experts have time to inspect areas planned for planting visits are designed to correct the practice of farmers and other individuals ordering more trees than needed for a specified area and also selecting trees unsuitable for certain soil types frequently other advice and assistance can be given which will be helpful partic ularly to those who have not planted trees before the system was explained to whitchurch township council at their last regular meeting in general the landowners are reacting very well to these inspec tions aisst reforestation chief g h bayly stated i dont think there is any doubt that this system will pay big dividends in terms of better choice of species and therefore in higher average survival of planting stocks oak ridges ratepayers association to back whitchurch candidate supporting one of the principles for which it was organized better municipal government oak ridges- lake wilcox ratepayers associa tion voted to sponsor a member as candidate for whitchurch town ship council in this years elec tions a motion that stanley rule be chosen was carried without a dissenting vote four members did not vote either way several persons in addressing the meeting stressed the advantage of an early nomination lending strength to the nominees cam paign for election with only one objection against immediate action the president w d renwick put the motion for mr rules nomina tion to a vote mr rule thanked the members for their support in a brief address he expressed confidence in the continued growth of the district and said the fact that the com munity now numbered many year round residents would undoubt edly prove a strong factor in elect ing a representative to the council communism nationalism and other forces are at work and it isj only a matter of time before misj sionaries will probably have to withdraw from west africa said gordon j bolender missionary on furlough from nigeria when addressing a missionary rally at the united missionary camp grounds he was one of eight speakers on foreign missionary work vicepresident of the denomin ations work in nigeria mr bolen der said that a selfsupporting self- propagating native church must be fully organized and set up as quickly as possible so that christ ianity might be spread even if the missionaries have to withdraw in charge of the morning session was rev ward m shantz prin cipal of emmanuel bible college and secretary of the foreign mis sions board of the ontario con ference dr r h bell of stayner describ ed the hospital now under con struction in northern nigeria the building will cost about 40000 rev arthur walsh of bethany united missionary church and a member of the general missionary board was in charge of the after noon session main address of the afternoon was given by rev r p ditmer of new courtney of ux bridge the house with a three quarter acre lot has been vacant since the death of mrs rae some time ago the sale is recorded this week of the henry ogden home on church street to mrs w h shaw stouffville the sale was negotiated by h w moyer local willoughby real estate agent spofford co expect to make use of the rear of their corner store block now a dwelling and occupied by mrs shaw and her sister miss waters the ogden family will move to an apartment over mr ogdens implement showroom on market street but contemplate erecting a new home in town in the near future no tribune department will be closed monday to thursday aug 21 to 24th speeders and overloaders paid in nearly 200 this week a total of twelve speeders and truck overloaders paid in a total of si 70 in fines this week for traffic violations while driving through stouffville another half dozen fastdriving motorists are already booked to appear in court in tor onto next week the cases against the traffic violators were all presented by constable rusiiell additional sum monses have also been handed out by the provincial police who have been checking the local portion of the highway from lincolnville to the cnr crossing town a deter mined drive is on to slow down traffic and council is continually urging stricter measures in stouff ville before a fatality occurs township and provincial police have been detailed to check over loading more closely and one haul age man paid 50 this week for this infraction while driving through town marked 80th birthday this wednesday on wednesday of this week mr lud lownsbrough of edward st will reach his 80th birthday on sunday last mr and mrs r giles of toronto mr and mrs w mark of oakwood and mr and mrs ross teel and family of woodville were wbwmbbmbm visitors at the lownsbrough home to celebrate the occasion mrs lownsbroughs sister mrs lottie mark who lived in this home for some time has been confined to hospital at little britain for three weeks mrs nancy hamilton is staying at the lownsbrough home at present after living in the west for 11 years the lownsbroughs came to stouffville tolive in 191g and lived for a time on obrien avenue be fore moving to edward street although unable to work mr lownsbrough is up and around his home the tribune extends con gratulations to this resident of long standing mr and mrs r b robinson phyllis and ben of almonte were visitors at the home of miss ethel byam last week mr robinson is a former stouffville high school teacher mr and mrs w h brillinger and mrs chas vanhoy of los angeles cal were visiting with c e brillinger one day last week upper school results stouffville high school mrs bert carpenter of brad ford is a patient in the brierbush hospital where she is undergoing treatment mrs carpenter is the former gladys doherty daughter of mrs j doherty of stouffville miss b mitchell of ringwood travelled to london ontario on tuesday to attend the funeral of her niece the late mrs beer
