church the attend ance at both morning and evening services was very gratifying gos pel messages in song were present ed by the plobardaires of tor onto their rendition of the holy city the hebrew benediction and the lords prayer as well as other sacred numbers was most inspiring at the morning worship service mr jas coates deacon of the church and moderator of the whitbylindsay association of baptist churches assisted in a solemn service of dedication of two children robert james bren- nan son of mr and mrs john brennan and shirley diane davi son daughter of mr and mrs g davison the goodfellowship class held their june meeting last tuesday evening june 20th at the home of mr and mrs 1 peddie mrs rey nolds was in charge of the program which consisted of scripture read ing prayer by rev lackey short readings by several members a paper read by mrs lehman on thei religion of the late jack miner a humorous poem by mrs t hem- mond and a review by mrs wal lace of her recent plane trip to scotland and interesting places visited during her six weeks visit to the land of her birth which was greatiy enjoyed by all mrs wal lace received an appreciative clap at the close of her remarks and the showing of numerous pictures of places visited during her trip lunch was served the apprecia tion of the class to mr and mrs peddio for their hospitality was expressed by the president mrs l pugh rev ralph and mrs wilson and daughter ruth accompanied by a lady friend from oshawa called upon mr and mis sam taylor and family on sunday evening mr and mrs earle cook enjoy ed a motor trip over the weekend the businessmens community picnic to sky loft last wednesday afternoon and evening attracted a large crowd f young and older folk and an enjoyable time was hail by all mrs wm evans was the winner of the lucky number draw receiving 5 cedar creek school won the war contest with claremont school in the ladies nail diiving contest mrs r fuller excelled there were three humor ous funis shown and free ice cream for all children there were races for all ages and baseball altogether it was a grand picnic for the community for which the business men deserve a big thank you tuesday rev 11 and mrs entertained rev and mr and loretta of victoria the two gentlemen are old friends mrs lackeys mr and mrs wm gray of garden hill were also present on wednesday mrs harry gibson of nelson bc was their guest on sunday rev a e and mrs arm strong and mr and mrs hugh miller were guests the latter lady is a dear friend of mrs lackey since school days in port hope the wa will be held on thurs day of this week in the school room of the united church there will also be a quilting bee for those who come early and sew everyone welcome last lackey currey square college parents cemetery decoration next sunday july 2nd next sunday july 2nd will be the occasion of the annual ceme tery decoration service in clare mont union cemetery rev h lackey minister in the local united church will deliver the address and the baptist male quartette will sing the time of the service is 230 oclock in the event of rain the service will be held in the baptist church mrs overland has her two little grandchildren visiting with her from hamilton while mr and airs gordon overland are enjoying a trip to the us the rain of early friday evening prevented ths legions prospects of a successful street dance so the members decided to postpone the affair for a couple of weeks the anniversary services of the united church were conducted by rev h lackey the guest speaker being dr a e armstrong for many years foreign secretary of the united church of canada who preached at both services he stressed the need for christian people to follow the teachings and life of jesus if they would win others to know and love him and cited examples of the moravian church in europe and us as be ing the highest type of true christians in the world the atten dance was fair but disappointment was felt that some had failed in realizing the great spiritual value of setting aside worldly hindrances to enjoy the benefits of assembling in the house of god for the pur- pose of praise and prayer rise up ye men of god have done with lesser things give heart and mind and soul and strength to serve the king of kings surely applies to our day as much as the days in which it was written miss cox assisted the choir with two vocal solos during the morning service and the quaker hill male quartette contributed three numbers during the evening service the church was beautified by baskets of peonies and orange blossoms brougham local subscriptions sought for park floodlights additional local contributions are asked by the claremont businessmens association in their campaign for floodlights in the local community park to date only contributions from outside business firms have been received and the local organization is ask ing tiiat the farmers of the district rally to the campaign which will pickering township police pickering township council is discussing the question of install ing radios in their police cars be cause of the high cost it is not believed that a twoway system of communication will be pur chased at this time but it is felt that even if the cars received in coming calls from the provincial police radio system it would be of great assistance the department will permit the installation if the local council sees fit to make the expenditure chief of police l v trinnel strongly recommends the use of radio in his work union church services begin next sunday j usual hours former pickering policeman dead william chester native and life long resident of pickering town ship former township police chief chairman of the pickering library board for go years and an enthus iastic hunter all his life died last week at his rouge hills home he was ss on march 17 he and mrs chester had quietly marked their gth wedding anniversary born on a farm at port union mr chester farmed most of his life but was also chief constable of pickering until his resignation in 1945 he and mrs chester left the family farm m years ago to move to rouge hills when the pickering library was organized in 1s0o mr chester be came its first chairman and had held that office since he was pop ular throughout pickering and scarboro as a hunter he took regular annual trips to northern ontario and had bagged more than 00 deer in 1011 at the age of 79 he brought down three deer in four shots mr chester was a life member of doric lodge af and am and centennial uiited church with their parents mr and mrs b ritchie during the weekend mr thos gammage suffered a sick spell over the weekend but is better at time of writing mr and mrs ayhner carter and little son of claremont visited with mr and mis a j gray on sunday mr m hamilton and mr w a knox were at columbus one day- last week visiting the formers brother and sister mr frank hamilton and mrs e hogle mr and mrs j prucyk and sons larry and marty of georgetown called on friends here recently mrs t c brown accompanied mr and mrs t sharp of green- bank on a motor trip to wood stock while they visited the formers sister mrs thornton mrs begg and children of tor onto visited at the sheppard home on sunday mr and mrs sherlock of tor onto also mrs burnett of mt clair nj called on mrs harvey on sunday mr and mrs w j brown also mr john brown all of toronto called on mrs t c brown on sun day mrs wm hamilton of markham called on his brother and sister-in- law mr and mrs m hamilton one day recently church service for the obser vance of the lords supper in st johns church on sunday was well attended the choir music and solo by mr robt miller also the beaut iful floral decoration added to the sacred service rev h lackey in a very sincere appeal urged that we place our glory not in temporal things but that we glory in the lord the next meeting of the wa of st johns church will be held at the home of mrs f cassie on tuesday july 1 at s pm members please note change in day of week new members and visitors will be very welcome a strawberry social sponsored by st johns church will be held on friday evening july 7 a drama his women folk sponsored by the buttonville wi will be presented mr and mrs gordon duncan and little daughter of markham visited with mr and mrs m har- lock mr and mrs booth of whitevale visited with mr and mrs l hop kins on sunday on thursday afternoon june 22 the wms auxiliary of st johns church met at the home of mrs c barclay with a large attendance the program for the afternoon was a review of the programs of the wms through the twentyfive years of union the president mrs m ellicott took charge of the opening devotions as out lined in the missionary monthly mrs geo duncan and helpers took charge of the program with the subject growing with the years mrs duncan called on the past presi dents of the years since union each giving the highlights of the turn in which they presided the wms has grown from five mem bers to now about forty in sum ming up the challenge for the future of the united church we stand at a strategic moment in the history of the christian church for service for christ and his king dom all fields are asking for more missionaries now and the call for larger giving and more devoted service a rededication of member followed at the close of the meet ing all enjoyed a very appetizing tea and the social gettogether a picnic celebrating 50 years of the womens institutes of south ontario district was held at brooklin arena on saturday june 21 wl members from whitby honeydale brougham brooklin attended at supper time the tables were set banquet stylo mr thomas mpp and his wife were present he was introduced by mrs brady past president of the district mr westney reeve also spoke as did mrs m birrill the new district president mrs n white convention chairman spoke on institute work and interests a beautiful birthday cake with candles was enjoyed by all sports and races were held for the children corsages were presented to charter members mrs cronk of pickering branch mrs mc- neilly mrs mackie mrs heron of brooklin gave prizes to
