tent caterpillars invade haliburton district the kawartha and halibuton districts have not escaped the seasonal plague of tent cater pillars the forest tent caterpillar out break which is causing a great deal of anxiety just now particularly amongst tourist operators and early vacationists may be expected to last another ten days or so depending upon the weather this insect is a voracious feeder and defoliates all types of broad leived trees and shrubs it may be observ ed migrating across highways roads and trails to fresh feeding grounds the caterpillar hatches in early june from egg masses deposited the previous fall the total hatch takes place in a matter of a lew days depending on weather con li- tions affecting the particular loca tion there is only one hatch per year experience has shown that the forest tent caterpillar appears in epidemic stages about every ten to twelve years it requires three to four years after the fust appear ance of the insect in large number before the parasitic insects catch up after which the tent cater- pillar almost disappears but not quite forest entomologists report ob serving a great number of the para sitic flies this year the pattern therefore is following the usual course and since this is the third year of the epidemic it may be expected that the year 1951 may be relatively free of the pest wide spread aerial spraying is neither practical nor necessary such spraying kills all forms of insect life both beneficial and otherwise and is very costly the damage done to forest trees is not serious although some old or degenerate trees may die persons owning cottages and tourist operators might secure some relief by using an ordinary ddt insecticide to spray tree trunks shrubbery sills and the lower part of building structures such measures are heneficial in protecting trees so sprayed and also helps to keep the larvae out of cottages the forest tent caterpillar should not be confused with the eastern tent caterpillar which affects wild and cultivated varie ties of fruit trees such as the diamond anniversary for chartered banking in stouf f ville this month records the diamond i anniversary of chartered bankin in stoulfville sixty years ago the standard hank with head oflices in toronto established an agency here in the premises now occupied by the mccuuough button law oflices while the town was served by several citizens doing private banking prior to this time 1s0 saw the standard bank establish ed in the year of confederation move into stouffville mr john elliott was head of the first local branch one of eighteen at that time mr elliott was born in the north of ireland and came to canada in 18s1 he entered his banking career at newcastle and from there was transferred to markham after one year at can- nington he moved to the head of the stouffville branch mr chas urquhart is a wellremembered local figure who entered the employ of the standard bank under mr elliotts managership cherries plums and apples this insect develops within the tent which it weaves and is readily noticeable along fence rows and road sides an examination of this insect will indicate an unbroken whitish line along the back of the larva as compared to a dotted or a broken whitish line along the back of the forest tent caterpillar larva vol 61 no 10 the tribune stouffille ont june 22 1950 second section urday the twelve forums which enjoyed this outing came from as far north as gamebridge and as far outh as greenwood in spite of the heavy rain in the forenoon about a hundred and ten enjoy ed the bountiful picnic dinner which resulted from pooling the ladies picnic baskets ice cream pop and tea vas supplied to all the provincial secretary of the federation of agriculture mr v s milburn was the main speaker and he complimented ontario county on their active farm forums mr milburn said that where you have active farm forums you have interest in the federation of agriculture in these strange times conditions are great ly improved for the farmer be cause of organization but much more could be done if more farmers were well informed about their federation of agriculture and took an active interest in the affairs of their organization increased prices mr milburn said that farmers produce must increase in price when grains made such a sharp increase during transit from the west to the eastern farmer to the man who has to buy the meat it looks like big profit for the farmers but with some feeds as high as 100 per ton the produc tion of milk and meat must be efficient to be successful the high income of the us worker has resulted in a greater supply of our meat being marketed in the us as the price of our produce in creases the spread between pro ducer and retailer increases as the retailers markup is on a percent age basis butter substitute in answer to a question re margarine mr milburn said that according to government statistics much dirty cotton seed oil must be used in the production of butter substitute the importation of this dirty oil was a serious threl to the canadian farmer last year canada imported onehalf the quantity of edible cotton seed oil which was used in the making of butter substitute but twice this quantity of dirty cotton seed oil was imported this oil is produced by the share croppers of the south every farmer who buys a pound of butter substitute helps to reduce canadian farmers lot to that of the share cropper canadian farm ers cant compete with this type of production without the danger of being reduced to the level of the share cropper in reply to another question from the chairman mr newman mr milburn stated that the pre sent legislation leaves much to be desired in the effectiveness of our marketing boards these boards have improved the quality of farm produce being marketed but until we can market our own produce we cannot get good results to be strong enough to do this we must have better financing of our feder ation of agriculture and a keener interest on the part of the members financing it was revealed that the town ships of east whitby whitby pickering uxbridge and scott placed a levy of onefifth mill on all farm property to finance the federation of agriculture the other townships only gave a grant which was very inadequate mr milburn thought the onefifth mill levy or more should be assessed in all townships and a direct membership was also a necessity he said if a farmer pays five or ten dollars direct to his organiza tion he is going to be interested enough to see how it is being used to be effective every county federation of agriculture should have a secretary and a fieldman in conjunction with farm forums etc they must have enough funds in the provincial office to greatly increase their staff clare burt the provincial secretary of farm radio forum mr clare burt gave the forum members an insight into the progress it was possible to secure in the coming year and felt the interest evidenc ed at the picnic showed a large measure of success from the past years work we hope to more than double our forum in ontario county in the next year the program of singing read ings and comedians added to the days enjoyment and a full schedule of sports and novelty stunts concluded a day of fun and interest for the farm forum families of ontario county preschool
