family day services on sunday mrs binstead contri buted solos mr and mrs morgan pugh of uxbridge attended the evening service mrs f benns and boys enter tained the following members of the family on the supt led in a responsive sunday school service and sang a solo my mothers prayer rev h lackey the pastor conducted a baptismal service when nine infants and small children received baptism as lehman the ladies auxiliary to the claremont branch of the canadian legion held their regular monthly meeting at the home of mrs d norton on wednesday evening may 10th with 23 members pre sent mrs e taylor presided there was a lengthy business dis cussion during which plans were made for several small projects to be carried out shortly and an invitation was accepted by the ladies to spend a social evening with the oshawa auxiliary on tuesday evening may 30th the wms met last thursday afternoon at the home of mrs lackey with an attendance of 41 and some children mrs johnson was in charge of the opening exer cises and business mrs lackey and mrs carson were jointly in charge of the excellent program the theme being the mothers and the home miss shaver contri buted a piano solo and mrs jack son a vocal solo mrs rawson the absent leader of the group sent a letter which was read during the meeting a convalescent card con taining the names of all ladies present has been sent to mrs raw- son in norland where she is ill with her daughter and soninlaw mr and mrs shaver the hostess served tea and dainty cookies assisted by four cgit girls mrs tomiinson moved a vote of apprec iation to mrs lackey and group for the fine inspirational program and social time the goodfellowship class was hejd lat tuesday evening at the home of mr anil mrs melvin john son with mrs r jackson and mrs h johnson in charge of the pro gram which consisted of a number of short poems by several mem bers on springs and the farm animals a paper on a pre and post war woman in public life by mrs h johnson a piano solo by mrs hugh gregg and a paper on the place for jesus of xazareth in our lives today by mrs jack son prayer was given by mrs lackey and responsive bible 1 reading of a psaim mrs lloyd pugh the newly elected president called upon the secretary for her report it was decided at the april meeting to have a membership fee of 23 cents and a roll call at each meeting mr boniface the retiring president was sincerely thanked for his three years of excellent service the june meeting will be held at the home of mr and mrs j peddie a couple of interesting contests were held followed by lunch brougham mothers day services were held in st johns united church on sunday afternoon with a good attendance the sunday school and the regular service were com bined and met at 2 pm with the sunday school superintendant in charge assisted by rev h lackey and mr allan ehicott mrs xott spent the weekend with friends at port perry mr and mrs e l crocker also mrs r w witter of toronto called on mrs l matthews one day last week mr and mrs a j gray and family also mr and mrs wm gray were at green river on sat urday evening when their mother mrs gray sr celebrated her illst birthday mr wm palmer and mr frank ham of claremont called on mr and mrs m hamilton one clay recently mr and mrs ross willson and daughter ruth of toronto visited his parents mr and mrs w e willson on sunday mr and mrs frank stephenson and miss mae stephenson and friend all of toronto called on their uncle mr bert beer and other friends on sunday afternoon mr thomas gammage who has been a patient at brierbush hospi tal for several months returned home yesterday mr and mrs wm knox visited with their son john and family on sunday and attended the service in eldad church when their grandson brian douglas knox was baptised mr and mrs al harvey and son john mrs harvey sr were with friends at peterboro a special oddfellows service will be held in st johns church here on sunday afternoon may 28th mr and mrs ross knox and bettyjean visited with mr and mrs b mcguckin of stouffville on sunday mr and mrs kenneth pascoe visited with mr and mrs hardy of toronto on sunday congratulations to mr and mrs harry spang on the arrival of a little daughter on mothers day the womens institute held their meeting on tuesday may sth the president mrs l john ston was in the chair and the minutes of the annual meeting were read and approved the sum of 25 was voted to be donated to the red cross conveners of stand ing committees were selected for the year a report was given of the conveners rally at guelph roll call was current events the hostesses were mrs al harvey mrs b harvey mrs c b shep- pard and mrs l sheppard tea was served at the close of the meeting some goo ontario womens institute members gathered may 10th to pay tribute to the associa tions founder at a ceremony in ottawa together with representa tives from the associated county women of the world which grew out of the affiliated institute move- unique baptismal service at brougham during the mothers day ser vice in the united church on sun day joanne clare anderson infant daughter of mr and mrs thomas anderson of toronto was baptised present for the christening were four generations the baby and her mother mrs anderson the grandfather mr howard malcolm and the greatgrandmother mrs a malcolm of green river who is 02 also present were three baby daughter of mr and mrs glover of oshawa add to floodlight fund with friday night entertainment mrs gordon hamlin of green river was the lucky lady to win the radio phonograph combination given away at the euchre and dance sponsored by the business mens association in support of the floodlight fund for the park levi fretz of stouffville won second prize- an electric teakettle the turnout was not as large as expected and it was believed that many from the country arrived late due to the fast time change euchre prizes were won by the ladies mrs loss hill and mrs stanley cook and the men stan slack and vic symes approximately s150 is expected to be realized from the affair whitevale mothers day was observed in the baptist sunday school and church last sunday morning the primary class sang mothers of salem and presented each mother and grandmother with a dainty basket of flowers sylvia michell and margaret gayes sang a duet these threeyearolds did excep tionally well the pastor rev h b hardy gave an appropriate mothers day message at the church service following sunday school greenwood mrs w gee of toronto visited for a few days last week with mrs fred gibson mr a morden has from the national film board and musical numbers everyone welcome claremont loses veteran citizen claremont district lost one of its eldest residents on monday may 8 1950 when joseph henry mitchell of the 7th concession of pickering township passed away suddenly in the private patients pavilion of the toronto general hospital the late mr mitchell had fallen on sunday morning from the top of an outdoor stairway which led to a workshop he had gone up to get some repairs for some harness his family believe he must have taken a weak spell as he had not been in the best of health but was still quite active up until the accident he was removed to brierbush hospital in stouffville for xray where it was found he suffered from a broken hip later he was removed to toronto but passed away on monday noon as a result of shock the late mr mitchell was 3 on the 20th of january he was born in devonshire england and came to canada as a youth with his parents the late sir and mrs john mitchell they settled near bow- manville later coming to pickering township following his marriage to annie lewis who predeceased him ten years ago they settled on the farm on the 7th concession where he resided until his death funeral services were held from the family residence on thursday the 11th to erskine cemetery he leaves an only son jack who is married and lives on the farm pallbearers were nephews of the deceased arthur and harold mitchell lloyd and walter white and allan and norman neal year at the drama festival which was held at oshawa recently the infant babies of mr and mrs alan short mr and mrs doug morden and mr and mrs vernon short were baptized at the morning service last sunday the ypu will meet at the home of mr ken brooks this thursday night for the final meeting until
