white elephant and variety sale it was a great suc cess or if you did not see the versatile minister of the church driving a vehicle you never expected to see him driving when he went to the west end of town to pick up plants elephants and ladies you again missed some thing in the basement there was a fish pond for children and roger moles party visited this depart ment as part of his birthday festivities there was a table of african violets which was com pletely sold out and the afternoon tea was well patronized delectable homemade bread rolls cakes cookies and candy disappeared like snow in july one lady carrying in two angel cakes made by a justly famed cook which cakes were attractively parcelled in cello phane found she had three men following hard after her to the home baking table and as she passed the cakes over the counter the men shouted sold in unison there were homemade rugs for sale in the line of poultry there were no feathered friends but there was a china hen setting which i doubt not had been setting for generations there were fresh eggs in cartons then there were the familiar henanduhickens gardeners grow and which look like green rosettes outside there was a musical instrument and a little hammer with which to play it which appealed to anyone of musical inclination it looked like an auto harp but it bore the proud title of mandolin guitar it had a bewitching tone then there was the wicker cradle in wonderfully good shape before that was sold there was a verbal contract enter ed into which bound the sales person to come and rock the cradle whenever its occupant became cross a high chair in which one of our middleaged men was reared was there a bit of the edge of the table was broken off which his mother explained he did when he was mad one day pictures and frames there were in a variety of size and style there were perennials and glad bulbs and shrubs and houseplants there was a bouquet of beautiful pansy faces in variety of colour framed in the green of maidenhair fern a lovely old platter with gravy well stood on a table with an astounding variety of vases ornaments and dishes of all sorts then there was a heavy old wheelbarrow which one lady put in remembering the tons and tons she had helped to carry on it another lady declared the evening before the sale sbe intended to buy the barrow she needed it and so she did they say its a mans world but its amazing how many women rise far enough in it to exercise the snow shovel and push the wheelbarrow when the wind suddenly blew hard some of the articles for sale flew a bread mixer stood by a little electric warming and baking unit there were book shelves and bookends and books perhaps the highlight of the sale was the little collie pup donated by mrs s davies the children couldnt resist it one browneyed girl stood quietly for long stretches the motherless pup cradled in her arms both looking content with the world but it was a larger boy who suddenly appear ed with the cash and carried home the little collie some of the unsold elephants have been stabled away until an auction sale appears on the horizon when they will be led forth to be converted into legal tender now that this sale spon sored by the womans association is over one can only lean back and say strange how a sale like this touches the heartstrings playing tender melodies of
