racial prejudice may be defined as one of the chief moral wrongs which still exist in our modern world to say that the negro is inferior to the white man is an indis creet vile lie for every person on the globe sprang from the same basis set down by the lord our god and any one who wishes to dispute this point may find facts in the holy bible it is true that when the english set up the slave trade taking negroes from the shores of africa and bringing them to america to do the manual labour for the lazy white plantation owners these slaves were the underdogs times have changed however but some people ignorant of the fact still refuse to concede the negro his rightful position in the world of today when clever men are so foolish as to think of or to say such things as slavery js the negroes natural and normal position and that is a great physical and moral truth we some times wonder how their minds would adapt themselves to a reversal of posi tion it would be interesting to note carefully the reactions of the white populace on seeing their kind kicked around like dogs spurned by all spat on and called curs would they remain in this suppressed position or would they fight for life liberty and equal rights with the common man as did the negroes with the help of a few sympathetic whites after many years of inhuman treatment bitter feelings and disillusionment my guess is the latter and is based on a deeply founded belief in racial equality so fellow whites let us think for ourselves look back on facts and forward to the future think of the part many negroes have played in our modern world george washington carver one of the greatest scientists ever born to enligh ten the world in scientific development and certainly the greatest asset given by the negro race to the modern world freely gave his time and energy although the white world was against him many others would develop into useful citizens if they were given half a chance since the prejudices of many people are merely an inheritance but everyone has a mind of his own and is able to think for himself let each one discard his prejudices and face the facts the negro is not yet equal with the white but some day in the not to distant future he will occupy his rightful posi tion then and only then will the pale face realize his mistake and find that he must adjust himself to this estab lished truth unpack your suitcase and live elda gray she is an old woman now old and very tired her children are all married and her husband died several years ago she potters about trying to fill empty hours she says she has never really made herself at home in the world she has always been like a person who stops over night in a hotel and feels it isnt worth while unpacking for so short a time there are too many people in the world like this woman waiting to unpack their suitcases they are going to do a lot of real honesttogoodness living when well when the children grow up when they have more money when they find a better apartment when they get into the sort of work they really like they are going to read take up that hobby take that correspondence course theyre going to unpack every thing but right now there isnt time so the days drift by and then weeks but fiftytwo weeks make a year they put off doing all those little things that youre dreaming about flowers on a table in that cubbyhole will be much more pleasant in the new home youre going to build you may not be able to settle down for long hours of rending now but you can snatch fifteen minutes now and then there are numerous things to be enjoyed light now not anticipated but experienced unpack your suitcase at once and do those things youve been intending to do for some time there is really no reason to go throughout life as a stranger in a strange land make yourself at home here unpackand get settled instead of waiting for a better time that may never come the advantages of the school area fay oneill grade xiii the school area is something which is badly needed in several places a good example of this need is our own community a school area would provide comfortable ac commodation and more facilities thus making school life more enjoyable as things stand now in our school and in other schools also school life is rather dull and not very enjoyable at times the class rooms are crowded so crowded that there are several basement rooms which are most uncomfortable but are the best that can be provided to the students who come on the buses hot lunches would be of great value our school provides now at noon hour hot soup or hot chocolate this is some help but makes a great deal of ex tra work for the students and the teacher in charge in spite of this those students still have to have sandwiches for lunch every day the school area would solve this pro blem by providing hot lunches in a cafeteria every year when commencement rolls around we have to wonder about where to have it before the community hall was built it was held in the school this was very inconvenient the parties and dances and other school activities are as much a part of school life as studies and should be held in the school having a school area would provide a larger building with an auditorium where school activities could be held when pt period arrives there is a big argument about who gets the gym the boys or the girls when we do get the gym it is the same activity everyday tumbling or volley ball because the gym is too small for anything else a new gym which could be built in a new school would remedy this problem a library yes we have one but it could be larger and better if it were the students might be encouraged to read the required six books for our kindergarten we need a room since it is a class not separate from our educational system but a part of it it should most certainly have a place in the school instead of in a church or just any available room put all these things together and they spell out a new school or at least an addition to what we already have a school area would remedy all these things not only for our community but for surrounding communities also vol which ho used as an illustrator from the age of 10 he was also a painter and sculptor hut his best remembered work consists of drawings for the divine comedy don quixote and the bible this is a drawing for the pore bible produced in 1805 and there were also two other malefactors led with him to be put to death and when they were come to the place which is called calvary there they crucified him and the malefactors one on the right hand and the other on the left then said jesus father forgive them for they know not what they do and they parted his raiment and cast lots and the people stood beholding and the rulers also with them derided him saying he saved others let him save himself if he be christ the chosen of god and the soldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vinegar and saying if thou be the king of the jews save thyself and a superscription also was written over him in letters of greek and latin and hebrew this is the king of the jews the canadian deserts fred ohi grade xiii i think that some of the land in the vivian district should be used more efficiently only ten per cent of the cleared land is suitable for agricultural purposes this re gion is sandy therefore left in sod in hot days of the summer however the grass is scorched making it useless for most purposes except starting grass fires it is land which can be used for growing agricultural products if irrigated as the cost of such a project would be prohibi tive this sandy region where unused should be reforested with government trees planted by the occupant this may take a few years for a possessor with large tracts of land but in time such an undertaking would pay if properly cared for the woodlot would be selfregenerative a legacy for many generations to come there is reforestation done by the department of lands and forests but this department cannot reforest the laige areas of denuded land in canada woodlands and reforested areas are natural reservoirs which provide water for springs and wells areas which have been stripped of their covering of trees have suffered a drop in the water level of the soil resulting in drying wells and springs the area at vivian has a light rolling countryside covered with grass in this area the heavy rain of a storm washes away some of the vegetation this leads to erosion and abandonment of farms these rolling sections can only be successfully used for forest growing an illustration of a ruined piece of land is on the eighth concession you have seen this place each time your car has travelled on this road but the sight may not have made a very deep impression some of the soil was taken out for some reason which i do not know the ground was left exposed to the effects of the rain and wind among the deep gullies which crisscross this piece of land are some patches of grass the remnants of a once fertile field before long the owner should reforest his property with suitable trees to check further deterioration of the agricultural value of the land because of the lack of trees some aieas are slowly dry ing the annual rainfall is decreasing if something is not done soon to supplement this lack of trees these areas may soon end up as a drifting desert of sand why fathers get gray eddie murphy grade 10b why do fathers get gray it is easily unstood after a visit with mr jones mr jones comes home after a hard days work and is greeted at the door by a mob of screaming kids battling his way through the mob he slowly eases his tired aching body into his favourite chair only to leap up in pain and pull out a one inch thumb tack the kids play cowboys and indians yelling shouting and tearing the upside down pop gets fed up with the racket and tries to stop them he finally gets them calmed down getting off with only a black eye which was hit by a popgun the next day is saturday and mr jones and the kids are all kicked out of the house for the day so that the boss can do some house cleaning therefore pop decides to take the brats to a matinee after herding them into the movie and buying each some candy popcorn and pop he settles down to have a good sleep but the show is a western one and pop is awakened by the yelling and cheering he is kicked in the shines a bottle of pop is poured down his neck and his face and clothing is covered with sticky candy by the time our hero escapes the mob he is glad to be home so that he can lock himself in his room until monday auto fashions for fifty dean wagg longer lower wider cars is the modern automobile trend although the new cars are extremely different it can easily be seen that the styles at the half way mark in the century are closely related to the auto styles that were popular in the twenties and early thirties the new cars are boxy and sport large windows for better vi sion much like those found on cars several years ago in fact the new cadillac buick and oldsmobile for nineteen fifty have one piece windshields how did our modern cars for today acquire such styles is a process that can be easily traced first the cars be came lower and wider in 1942 fade away fenders be came stylish in 1944 the fenders faded right out of sight on some models thus our new cars acquired their flat sided shapes perhaps ford cars have shown the greatest changes and improvements of our popular models of course the ford cars still maintain their us motors but that is about all that remains of former ford designs the ford products are perhaps the best shaped and the most stream lined cars on the road they are all without back fenders and all sport the ever popular bustle back ford cars are now equipped with front coil springs the new models have also retained their former pep and pickup and certainly live up to the old slogan watch the fords go by a question that is being asked these days is if the new cars are as good as the old ones i think that everyone realizes that although on the average the new cars are heavier than the older ones that the body generally is made of poorer material than that used in older models of cars the extra weight found in the new models is made up in motor and the frame undoubtedly the motors in the new cars are more efficient they are more powerful and therefore allow the cars of today to go much faster with no greater strain on the motor itself what are the cars of tomorrow going to look like having looked at the new studebaker one can almost ima gine and if the designers are not careful finally autbs will sprout wings and well all be driving aeroplanes
