of pick- ering 2nd vicepres of the can adian jersey club arrived home from the annual meeting which was held in vancouver recently after an eventful trip with the ecretary las bremner and four other directors they were held up at baston bar on the eraser river by snow slide which covered a freight train about seven miles ahead of their train this slide was so great that the track could not be cleared after the two days wait so the railway arranged for them to be carried over the eraser line by n aerial cable where they caught a train from north bend for van couver as it was they missed the annual meeting of the bc jersey club but were in time for the annual meeting of the canadian club this was the first time that any cattle club had held their annual meeting west of the rockies but the delay was made up for by the way the bc breeders entertained them many of the herds were visited on the main land while the secretary flew to the island to see some herds there these breeders have a lot of fine cattle with great records which are easier to make there because of their lush pastures and excellent crops of forages in showing and in sales these herds are more in contact with the us herds in oregon and washington than they are with those of eastern canada although at the last royal in tor onto cattle from bc secured many of the top prizes following the annual meeting the club mem bers were entertained at a lunch eon party by directors of the pacific international exposition which holds its show in van couver a stop off was made at cal gary where the local jersey men showed pickering fire chief resigns served 27 yrs twentyfive or six of the mem bers of the pickering volunteer fire brigade attended the annual meeting and dinner at the gordon house and heard fire chief frank prouse tender his resignation after 27 years service with this organiza tion assistant chief arthur mitchell with many years of really devoted attention to this volunteer community task also resigned in 1948 43 calls were made out side of the village 3 within in 1949 4 in the village and 39 out side- 90 per cent of all calls are to the west of pickering village 115 has been received over township has over 250 miles of roads with over 220 miles to be kept open for motor traffic with snow plowing equipment our taxes will be some higher for 1950 as the amount to be raised will be over of
