would be advisable to wear the full- dress regalia if it was available he explained that issuance of the order was necessary to bring courts back to their prewar standard the necessary equip ment was not available during the war in some places and tempor arily the custom was dispensed with however things are appar ently now considered to be back to normal old homestead recalls respected ruddy family on the brock road about half way between quinns corners and victoria corners in brock twp is found the old ruddy homestead it is a large old rambling red brick house with the while brick trim so fashionable 100 years ago it stands on the side of a steep hill overlooking the valley where flows ruddys creek although in a state of dilapida tion the house is yet makin shelter for some who find jt a refuge from the present housing shortage as one of the pioneer home steads it is interesting to note the quality of the materials and work manship vhich made ruddys house one of the finest and most enterprising homes of long ago its a short distance to wagners lake from the ruddys here james ruddy and his wife reared their family one of whom was the late judge ruddy of whitby and ran a large boarding house for the workers in the saw mill which is nowhere to be seen today it was directly north of the house and built hard by a great dam over ruddys creek today only the vestige of the clam can be found and its position ascertained by the remnant of two or three old logs back beyond and to the east can be found the basin now dry where the mill pond lay today ruddys creek flows on but only in the memory of some of the old pioneers who still remain does the old red house on the hill recall the former beehive of industry hospitality at its best and the happy labour of the pioneers they remember when the great stationary sawmill was in operation in winter great logs of choice pine and hemlock were drawn from the adjacent forests with sleighs and horses the drivers so proudly exhibiting the superiority of their teams and brass mounted harness the fairs dobles st johns shiers and all the pioneers of long ago greeted one another and after unloading the logs at the mill always saved time to visit mrs ruddy in her large kitchen where they were warmed with hot cups of tea and tastes of her culinary ability dumb but helpkuij owls contrary to legend are among the dumbest of all birds however the same may be said of anyone who destroys owls since these predatory birds feed almost exclusively on small rodent pests brown are in the hands of the womens institute
