up three with stolen truck on 9th con constable fred white of pick ering township rounded up three auto thieves driving a stolen truck on the 9th con early sunday morning the trio had apparently attempted to get gas and oil at the township tanks brougham and later at the claremont coop ware house al robinson local coop doss was called to the plant early sunday morning but found noth ing amiss although the one eleva tor door was pushed open win three cups ot interschool field day competing in the interschool field meet at brooklin last week claremont students carried off three championship trophies ivy schneider won the senior girls championship june davis tied for the intermediate girls champion ship and joey pegg took the inter mediate boys title pickering school won the school championship their second since the cup has been presented clare- mont has captured the title twice in the past there has teen too much hush hush on the part of form ing this new school area and everybodys made a pass at it except the ratepayers who will pay the shot declared wm doherty at a public meeting of north pickering ratepayers held in the claremont school on mon day evening this area board if only for courtesy might keep the clare mont board informed of what is going on he said the meeting presided over by g m forsyth of claremont was called primarily to discuss the proposed incorporation or annex ation of ajax but a number of speakers touched on the new school area and the meeting quickly evolved into a discussion of the area formation and whether or not it was good for claremont to be in on have the twelve acres of land for the new school been bought at 1000 an acre asked mr fred ward they have replied clerk johnston if the project should fall through could we get any of our money back enquired mr sid dunning i couldnt say returned the clerk the debenture issue on the pro posed new school will mean an annual tax levy of from 331000 to s32000 mr johnson municipal clerk told the gathering it was revealed the new board deemed it advisable to purchase twelve acres rather than only seven as subsidized by the govern ment since by doing so they received a reduction of 200 per acre and in addition could pre vent the new school from being hemmed in by real estate which might at some later date have to be expropriated water was a big factor in selecting the present site declar ed deputyreeve frank disney he said that an estimated 1600 gallons would be required the deputyreeve told the rate payers that five sites had been proposed before the present one was selected several were turned down by the department because they were too close to highway no 2 former reeve and warden wm reesor stated that he believed claremont and the north corner of the township should have been included in the stouffville- markham school area so that the student wouldnt have to travel so far the department of education advised against going in with stouffville and markham but they said that if we thought it advis able in the future we would change stated mr sid dunning of course the department may have changed their mind by how as they so frequently do he con tinued wm doherty told the gathering that he had only recently been in brampton where there was grow ing dissatisfaction over the area there because no one could find out anything that was going on some schools he learned were pre paring to withdraw he reported school inspector rendel one of the men in charge of pushing through the areas takes the attitude that the ratepayers are only a nusiance declared air doherty the department of education is too independent in pushing the matter through he continued mr doherty declared that a vote should have been taken to determine whether or not the ratepayers were in favour of the area idea why any council or school board members wanted to stick their necks out ill never know as theyre in for a peck of trouble he continued deputyreeve disney declared that he wasnt in favour of going in with whitby or whitby town ship as at first proposed for pick ering as this township has suffic ient population and assessment right within its own borders as far as the area being hush hush public meetings were held and your trustees were at those meetings declared mr disney presently proposed boundaries are only tentative mr dunning claimed mr doherty is a former mem ber of the claremont school board and mr dunning is a member between fifty and seventyfive ratepayers attended the gathering fear of annexing ajax expressed by some residents in north fears that ajax might prove to be a burden rather than asset if it is returned to the township were expressed at a public meeting of north pickering ratepayers held in the claremont school on mon day evening the meeting was pre sided over by mr g m forsyth who called upon clerk lloyd johnston of pickering to outline the situation and explain the proposals of central mortgage and housing corporation now in con trol of the crown village according to mr johnston two proposals were at hand the one would return ajax to the town ship along with various services such as water streets and sewers for a nominal sum the other suggestion has been for ajax to be incorporated but to annex a larger portion of pickering farm land for this purpose what do they want to get rid of ajax for questioned one rate payer central mortgage and housing dont want to operate a municipal ity so theyre quite ready to turn it back to the township replied mr johnston the township clerk went on to state that according to assessors figures there were about three million dollars in taxable property now in ajax the township he believed would have to elect a public utility commission to handle the various village services as to the matter of relief which the township has always feared might prove to be a big item in ajax had been anything but burdensome to date mr johnston declared with only three families on relief there at the present time home owners in ajax were being carefully screened- he said and only good citizens with steady jobs were being allowed in a meeting to discuss the two proposals and come to a decision if possible has been called by the municipal board at brougham on thursday oct 27th skunks in brougham many are the reports of the skunk population in this pickering twp hamlet but an interesting one was learned this week one of the striped pussies was trapped but managed to make good his escape carrying away the trap a clicking sound under front porch drew mrs m
