calendar is uneconomic variable and unre liable arthur j hills of ottawa told a western ontario group last week it is not suprising a calendar devised in the time of the roman chariot should be inadequate in this age he said in advocating adoption of the proposed world calendar describes proposal mr hills canadian chairman of the world calendar association outlined the suggested change and its benefits under the proposed scheme- the year would be divided into equal quarters of 91 days and dates would all have the same day each year at the end of each year an extra day would be inserted between dec 30 the last day of the year under the new system and jan 1 it would be celebrated as an inter national holiday and could be called worlds day mr hills said in leap year an extra day would be inserted between june 30 and july 1 it would also be celebrated internationally proposal rejected a proposal to put the calendar scheme on the agenda of the cur rent meeting of the united nations general assembly was thrown out recently mr hills noted he said however a crowded agenda and not lack of support was responsible for its ousting canada was one of the nations supporting retention of the world calendar subject on the agenda there is really no opposition to calendar reform mr hills said with apathy and inertia the only factors to be overcome he reminded rotarians a can adian sir stanford fleming was the father of standard time all major religious groups have en dorsed adoption of the proposed calendar he said under the system each quarter would have 91 days made up of one month with 31 days followed by two with 30 days each month would have 26 work days plus sundays holidays would not go mean dering through the week he said labor day would fall on the same day each year and there would be no need for revision of school schedules christmas would be celebrated on a monday generally conceded the best day for the observance he said the falling of christinas and new years on wednesdays or thursdays has been particularly wasteful he said the chronic kicker is usually the fellow who has to foot the bills success and failure are just the difference between turning up your sleeves at work and turning up your nose now that moscows first skyscraper is being erected it is assumed that any day now pravda will come out with the announcement that not only was the skyscraper invented by the russians but that they drew up the plans for the tower of babel seals in haliburton what were they that is the question four ohio men are asking themselves today after getting a look at four odd- looking critters in pigeon lake haliburton last week the four visitors r d sondes h c leueau and o r hanehett of wadsworth ohio and c l ross of marion ohio were members of a fishing party staying at keneden park they started out to fish the lake some time during the morn ing and stopped to eat lunch in a bog on the west side of pigeon iake which according to mr sondles lies in a bay somewhere between grenadier and muskrat islands there was some sort of a dis turbance in the bog as we were bringing the boats in to shore says mr sondles but we didnt pay any particular attention to it we thought it may have been muskrats after eating lunch we started to pull away i was in the lead boat an was just about to try some casting when i noticed what appeared to be a large log and paused not wanting to get snarled up in it then the log suddenly came alive and first thing i knew a hugehead came up and looked at me then the thing whatever it was dived the rest of the party noticed what was going on then and the creature kept bobbing up and down we saw three of them at one time and there might have been more and maybe you think im crazy but i say they were seals asked to describe the whatzit mr sondles claimed it was some where between five and seven feet in length with a large head that would poke out of the water a distance of about fifteen inches the face was decorated with a set of whiskers he says leading the fishermen to believe that the creatures have been seals the americans were by no means through with strange sights how ever as another boatload of fisher men reported seeing numbers of the animals on the east side of the lake one thing emphasized by the americans it was no alcoholic hallucination they stated empha tically that the party was cold sober so peculiar did the story sound that mr sondles and mr ross agreed with alacrity to a sugges tion that they go across to the department of lands and forests to tell their story to mr gordon buie fish and wildlife inspector for the district mr buie said it was his opinion that the creatures were most likely beaver which are quite abundant in the district or possibly otter there have been no otter reported in the district for some time said mr buie but there is still a chance that there could have been a fam ily there and they are very playful fellows in the water he did not entirely discount the theory that now picking wealth i es will have later baxters greenings mcintosh snows talman sweets mann northern spies baldwin our crop is exceptionally good quality this year bring your containers save some money 227 greenbrae orchards 1 mile east and 1 mile south of balsam ph claremont 88rl3 the animals were seals either we have had reports this past summer that certain types of seal have invaded the st lawrence river but i dont know how far west theyve come a seal is a fast swimmer but in order to get into this district theyd have to make their way up the trent canal buts thats quite a trip this is the first report of this nature we have had if we get any more there will lie an investigation made what were they its still any bodys guess poor handwriting does a nice job
