are not being asked to foot the bill for a new arena in town as is the case in the majority of towns in stouffville a publicspirited group have gone ahead and organized that great asset on a company basis so that the undertaking is strictly on a freewill basis in gratitude for the work this group has done and is doing for the town the municipal council is seeing to it that the new arena will receive all the necessary services it requires such as water and hydro the cost of which is a mere pittance to that which would be put on taxes should the municipality have been asked to provide such an arena the municipal council is indebted to this company for bringing this grand project to town and the ratepayers in turn should feel indebted and invest in the under taking if they are at all able another couple of hundred share holders are required to complete the undertaking free of debt call at the company office today mc- cullough button and discuss purchase of a share with k treasurer its tax time again k r davis was on his annual tax errand last week handing out those inevitable slips that have been issued since doomsday this year the people of stouffville must have raised their eyebrows when they noticed that the tax rate was higher and therefore the amount of their tax increased as stated before the items on the tax bill showing any increase were those items beyond which the council have no direct control main increase was the public school taxes and a slight advance in county rate the council itself got by with the rate they imposed last year but it is inevitable that taxes will increase with everything else services cost more than they formerly did and the wonder is that the council got by without an increase in their part of the tax rate when collector davis was delivering the tax bills he gather ed in a substantial amount of cash received from persons who just looked at their bill and hauled out the money or sat down and wrote out a cheque they must have felt that the sooner the unpleasant task was settled the better after all it should not be unpleasant to pay our taxes we receive many benefits such as fire protection good roads police services street lights and other items we can cheer up in the knowledge that the increased tax v rate in stouffville this year was one of the smallest advances recorded by any munici pality in york county mr harry strong of chicago who was visiting his sister in town mrs mcgrogan next the post office was on a fishing trip to mea- ford accompanied by his sister and ronald who visited relatives in the northern town manouvreing his big truck at the pit of the stouffville sand gravel co jack watson narrowly escaped injury when he jumped as the big truck went backwards over the side of the pit the truck was severely knocked about and was brought into stouffville motors but fortunately for the driver he leaped from the cab just as the truck started to hurtle from solid ground a dead skunk proved as great an offense to the people in the neigh borhood of william and harold streets last thursday as any live animal of the name all morning the fumes were almost strangling some of the neighbors but it never occurred to anybody to throw a couple of shovelsful of earth over the animal and promptly end the trouble at one oclock a female resident appealed to the reeve to do something about the trouble so the street department promptly removed the offensive fellow to a burying place where his presence would not be noticed the out dated draw tickets no fraud whang whang went the knocker on the front door at the home of the reeve on sunday morning on being answered from within the stranger was admitted and quickly made known his mission said the visitor im from unionville and last night on visiting stouffville i was accosted by two lads selling yellow colored tickets on a car sponsored by your athletic association both i and my wife bought one despite the fact we are decidedly scotch imagine our chagrin later to find the tickets we bought were drawn for on august 17 this is a fraud and i hastened here to inform you of what is going on in your town in the interest of the good name of the athletic association i hope you will do something to catch up with this racket after pouring out this informa tion the informer from the neighboring village was advised that there really was nothing wrong with the tickets that the draw had been cancelled on account of rain and would take place on august 31st it was explained that the athletic associ ation has authorized the selling of any tickets on hand when the post ponement was made because of rain and that regardless of the date on them they would rank just the same as new tickets printed since the postponement the visitor went away feeling much relieved if a little disappoint ed that he had not figured in un earthing some fraudulent racket that he imagined was being carried on the reeve thanked his caller for promptly bringing the matter to light when he felt he had been jlpped for now he could feel at ease again and enjoy sun day in a peaceful and contented frame of mind five ribs broken in car accident everybody regretted the serious accident which befel miss ruth badgero on wednesday afternoon last week as she was proceeding along no 7 highway motoring to toronto driving alone miss bad gero ran into the rear leaving her so far as the press cpuld learn miss badgero could not recall the accident and may never be able to do so the driver of the truck was ed stewart of markham and while he was not injured the truck did not come out so fortunate birthday recalls past years mrs judith m bennett who lives with her daughter mrs miller on north church street celebrated her birthday last week enjoying excellent the popularity of the dining hall and the busy horse stables that went with the business in those days it was not uncommon to have a line of horses stabled for over night while the travellers did their business and made it a point to reach the mansion house as an overnight stopping place after the bennett family retired from business mr and mrs o bennett located on the farm at claremont where
