within an ace of losing his car by fire on saturday evening the harvey car was parked in front of the family residence at brougham when a passing motor ist noticed smoke inside the ve hicle he summoned mrs harvey who was nearby and the blaze a- mong some papers on the rear seat was extinguished it seems that mr harvey had just returned with the car a short time previous and recalled flick ing the ashes from a cigarette the assumption is that some of these ashes blew in the rear window and caught on some papers there the fortunate thing was that mr harvey didnt drive his car in to the garage and close the doors as was his usual custom had he done so and the flames eaten any closer to the gas tank a conflagra tion of considerable proportions might have resulted as it was damage and farm improve ment field day to be held on the farm of heber down brooklin on september 8 is gathering momen tum topranking agricultural experts of ontario including col the hon thomas l kennedy minister of agriculture will be present and it is expected that the official opening ceremony will be conducted by hon leslie m frost premier of the province of ontario the tentative program of the days activities in which a five year program of soil conservation and farm improvement practices will be inaugurated was arranged and this event the first of its kind to be held in canada is expected to draw interested farmers and technical agriculturists from all parts of ontario as well as from neighbouring states and the province of quebec wide rrangc of projects canadas first soil conservation and farm improvement day will find the soils agricultural engineer ing and horticulture departments of the ontario agricultural college guelph jcooperating in carrying out a complete facelifting job on the heber down farm plans have already been made for a wide range of projects to change completely the method of operating the farm among the most formidable pro jects are the entire elimination of a thicklygrown fence row the construction of a water diversion terrace the institution of a con tour cultivation and strip cropping procedure ditching and laying of tile drains a pasture improvement project and a buckthorn eradica tion demonstration the crops branch of the ontario department of agriculture will carry out the last named two projects while the department of lands and forests will conduct a reforestation proi ject and woodlot improvement demonstration project on part of- the farm as fast as the contour strips are plowed seeding of fall wheat will be done the outstanding feature of the day is that the work which will be undertaken and carried through to completion will constitute what would normally be a fiveyear pro gram of soil conservation and farm improvement to modernize farmhouse in addition to the work in the fields on the down farm the barn will be renovated and painted part of the farmhouse will be complete ly remodelled and modernized and the surrounding of the farm and farmhouse landscaped by outstand ing horticulturists from the oac at guelph at last weeks meeting miss kathleen taggart of the womens institute- branch of the depart ment of agriculture submitted plans for remodelling and modern izing of the farm home these plans having been prepared by the cen tral housing and mortgage cor poration which is cooperating in the project one of the plans sub mitted was accepted by the com mittee and this work will be done prior to and on the day of the demonstration so that the visitors can visualize what can be done in modernizing a typical farm home speaking program li plans were made for the pro gram of speaking which will be held between 1230 and 2 pm at the headquarters on the farm the regular cbc farm broadcast by jack mcpherson will be given direct from the farm this will be followed by the formal opening ceremonies and speeches with howard harper of goodwood chairman of the general committee as master of ceremonies the group to make application for the concessions for lunch tents no charge willbe made for space for eating tents or booths and womens groups interested in pro viding such facilities for the huge crowd are asked to communicate with the secretary for the day h lynn fair ontario department of agriculture uxbridge ontario a rest tent with motion pictures to entertain the crowd and other headquarters facilities will be made available at strategic loca tions on the farm a time schedule is being drawn up for demonstra tions and talks on the various projects so that the thousands of visitors can have a clear picture of what is being done and why it is being done parking space will be made available for 2000 automobiles as the event is arousing such provincewide interest that parties are expected
