has bearing on local development public school to be overcrowded a recent survey indicates that there will be some 33 beginners at stouffville public school after the summer holidays and the trustee board are giving much thought to just how they are to be accommo dated of course there will be an entrance class passing out but notwithstanding it is feared an extra room will have to be found at present there are 27 attend ing public school from outside the section and the trustees would be loathe to refuse them the privilege of attending the town school even if this step were resorted to many of them would be in classes not valuable animal thrown from truck returning from richmond hill fair on tuesday night with a load of horses for vincent baker the truck driver was forced to bring musselmans a car belonging to ray ormston unionville stolen from main st markham on saturday evening was recovered shortly after supper by constable rusnell of stouff ville at musselmans lake mr ormston had only left his car for a few moments when several young lads hitchhiking to the lake got in and drove away the car with keys missing was discovered in the cedar beach parking lot but no trace of the thieves real disappointment may justly be felt all over ontario and especially in this local district close to toronto because it is now clear that there will be no action at washington this year on the big joint seaway plan between united states and canada the st law rence seaway bill before congress has no chance of passing this year no place would benefit more directly than the stouffville dis trict terriffic big employment provided at the docks with sea going freighters coming to our very door for unloading and great additional demand for farm pro duce by reason of the thousands of extra employees at the docks all would enhance the value of the local district unfortunately big us interests do not want the development and montreal does not like it naturally although the dominion government appears to be giving the scheme all the boost they can with the chances passing of geeting joint action the two big questions now up for decision in canada are these 1 is ontario hydro definitely prepared to sponsor the extra cost and responsibility of a separate power project rather than wait for a combined operation 2 is the labrador iron ore pro ject going to be able to proceed with development in 1919 with out promise of a lowcost seaway the ontario hydro question is honeycombed with complications and difficulties mostly arising out of the involved arrangements under which canada and the us are presently combined to under take the combined powerseaway scheme under the joint plan agreed to by both countries in 1941 canada was to have been reimbursed by the us for her share in having built the welland canal if this plan is abandoned and a separate power scheme is undertaken the chances of canada getting such compensation are at best slim this means a considerable dollar difference to the federal govern ment and quite probably to ontario it makes both parties reluctant to present any ultimatum to washington of course wash ington may veto a purely power development if this is proposed by canadians study present costs in any event joint studies are now proceeding by both ontario and the federal government as to just what the real costs of develop ment might be in the international section under presentday condi tions its unlikely that any official representations will be made to washington until these studies are complete even then nothing may be done before june 27 by that time the situation in washington may be more positive though its taken for granted now that there wont be any action certainly no favorable action on the seaway this term hoodlums not tolerated at musselmans lake after the 1st of june you must foe present al the stanley theatre to be eligible for fotonite there will be no signing attendance helping deal with a group of city teenagers at musselmans lake when the vil lage cop reached the scene on the montgomery farm other officers had not arrived but did reach the place in a fow minutes the gang sleeping in the barn had torn off the doors hut all submitted to arrest without too much of a scene between the ages of 16 and 19 nine were placed under arrest and charged with trespassing they were later given bail of 500 each after spending the remainder of the night in jail then each went to his or her city home constable ron watts and county constable kidd and others were on hand to make the arrests and the township constable took charge of the ease the youthful gang said they expected to meet up with another city gang over the weekend for battle all of which sounds as though too many of the teen agers in the city belong to the dark ages or were they as crazy back in the days of the indian trail one county official asked another wondered how parents hadlost such com plete control that they could not have their children at home over night new municipal office envisioned for markham tp immediate attention to problems such as assessment and planning in order to avoid heavy and un necessary expenses and messes in the future was urged upon markham township council by reeve vern griffin at the last regular meeting recording himself as strongly against the present system of assessment which he describes as dictatorial and unequal reeve griffin urged consulation with experts in order to provide the installation of a system which would lead to proper equalized assessments he was authorized by council to investigate the situation and report back council also authorized the reeve to investigate a concrete scheme for town planning and to report back the township already has had consultations with dr faludi town planning consultant who has offered to prepare a mas ter plan of the township on a two year basis at a reasonable cost it was pointed out to council that unless immediate steps were taken the growth of population in the township would create conditions which it would be both costly and difficult to remedy in a few years property purchase urged immediate action leading to the acquisition of property for town ship purposes was urged by the reeve who pointed out that the rapidly increasing values of land would force extra expenditures on the township in the future unless action was taken at once to pro vide a site for future township buildings reeve griffin envisioned a muni cipal building located somewhere on no 7 highway where persons could find it instead of the present location back of the main line of travel and which one would never spot as a municipal building he suggested that by looking ahead while markham grows by leaps and bounds money could be saved and the day would come when the municipal setup would be in keep ing with the really big municipal business now developing conner farm purchased by ross winter
