to congratulate our pickering township council on being able to give mr adam spears a sio per month pension after 23 years service to the town ship the late robert philips and the late edward wilson were asses sors but did they get any pension these men would leave home on monday morning and would be away all week they would have to stay wherever night overtook them pay for horse feed lodging and board mr spears had a good car and could be home every night he also was given the position of corn boarer inspector h is my opinion that after a man farmed for years then had a good position that he would not need a pension and if he did there is the old age pension and a good county home at whitby so we ask why put this on the tax payers v wilmot g shea there was a good attendance at church on clerk it would appear that the better type housing and farms of the municipality are carrying the largest share of the tax burden this assumption was drawn by clerk lloyd johnston during the course of an address which he gave to the pickering rotary club on monday evening the facts were also perused by the pickering council at their special meeting held on monday after noon it was revealed that in the six teen large subdivisions in the township there are 1305 houses 047 or 50 of which are year- round dwellings and have 2332 persons living in them the aver age assessment of these houses is 903 21 are houses assessed at 500 or less and which yield only 1750 in taxes a year the average house in these subdivisions yields 32 in taxes a year taking dunbarton subdivision as an example it was pointed out that eight years ago the school population was 120 while today its 110 at the rouge sub division the direct cost per pupil in 19 is was 51 but in 19 9 with a new debenture issue it will mean an extra 20 or 70 per pupil in costs these facts as outlined by the clerk are all under study by the pickeringwhitby township plan ning board considering that large families are as a general rule living in the cheapest houses it seems reason able to assume that the better type housing is carrying the tax load primary education is only part of taxes to it must be added 70 per pupil for secondary education relief hospitalization police etc the planning board realizes that cheap housing owned by persons with possibly very small amounts of money invested in good times may have very little interest in the future welfare of the township it is not hard to see trouble ahead when times get tough the clerk believes however these residents former claremont lady buried at oshawa funeral how they had benefited from the first two games they lost and that they must have listened to their coach and manager since those games as they showed much improvement their next game on schedule is at brook lin feb 4th in a return match with brooklin midgets our intermediate team is doing very well this year as they defeat ed dunbarton to the score of 11 to 1 on friday night and on tuesday night last at stouttville rink they defeated uxbridge intermediates 5 to 0 they have now played 5 games in the two leagues and have won 1 out of the 5 and the game they lost was only by one goal one nice
