thursday i our stouffville intermediate hockey club clippers play well but mohawks too good while stouffville clippers turn ed in a nice performance in their exhibition game on friday night the toronto mohawks were a bit too good for the local aggregation macdonald handled a big pile of rubber in the toronto net in sensational fashion the curly- haired netminder saw action last winter with port arthur west bruins who won the memorial cup mohawks took the game 95 scoring five in the first round and tour in the second the clippers knotched three in the first and two in the last period johnston scored two for stouff ville and crewson baker and geo rumney each one for toronto sermon got two digby rich ford primeau wieczorek and johnston each one over half the goals scored came on screen shots which gave both harper and macdonald very little chance the homesters best show of the game came in the last period they opened up with a real burst of speed and the goals by johnston and geo rumney were smartly executed austie baker and jack rumney assisted on both the game was comparatively clean with seven penalties being meted out two to stouffville and five to mohawks the only flare- up occurred in the second period when since and wieczorek were banished for five minutes for fighting the officials were referees jim grainger of richmond hill and ken laushway stouffville the editors mail a rumour out that weston juniors who played last week to a tie with tnionvillc will shortly be hoisted into junior b is now said to be false stan george brother of the manager roy george was also given the spectators toronto mohawks are in reality the swansea sentinels of the west toronto major mercantile group our note last week regarding controller balfours petition to the provincial government to relax the cost of birth certificates for minor league hockey players has drawn comment from the local juvenile management it appears that birth certificates cost 1 not 50c as was stated and service in receiving them is very bad in contrast a certificate for a stouit ville player requested from the same department in saskatchewan was received from away out west in only four days and in addition the cost was only 25c lloyd lee son of mr and mrs geo lee of bobcaygeon and former wellknown stouffville residents was in the hockey line up on monday night plnkey lewis coach of hamil ton aerovox who eliminated stouffville in the oila race for junior iv honours last winter took in the stouffvillebobcaygeon game here on monday night lewis is understood to be scouting games for professional connections he is still in charge of the aerovox club which he told the tribune had only one player left from last years classy crew vic sluce may be out of the clipper lineup when they go to bobcaygeon on thursday night sluce was involved in a motor accident on his way to the game in stouttville on monday night and although he went into the same and played a torn ligament began to give him trouble in the last period and he was forced to retire by the manager it would seem that this is a befitting time to acquaint our fans and followers of the grand old game of hockey as to how and why our present intermediate hockey club came into existance early in the season there wore persistant rumors to the effect that all was not well with the markham club and that it was doubtful if they would ice an intermediate team for the 191819 season during the past few years stouffville fans had consistantly followed and support ed the millionaires and had come to look upon them as their own team worried over the rumors that this colorful team was in danger of breaking up a group of stouffville business men got to gether to see what could be done about hockey for this community the services of coach ernie lawrie were secured and plans got under way for building up a team for stouffville the stouffville intermediate hockey club was formed and its officers are already known to you at our first meeting it was unani mously decided that we would ice an a team thereby allowing us a larger area from which to draw players it was also decided that we would sign as many local boys as possible along with what boys we could procure from areas not too far distant from stouffville it was figured that this would create more interest in our club and help con siderably our gate receipts after all it costs a lot of money to oper ate a hockey club realizing full well that practically all of our local payers as well as those from certain outside areas would be more or less inexperienced in the higher catagory hockey we felt the necessity of bolstering our team with a few of the older and more experienced players conse quently we approached certain members of last years millionaires fortunately we were able to sign sufficient of these players as would give our team the impus and stability they wotdd need the signing of these markham players unfortunately appears to be more or less resented by certain mem bers of the markham club as well as certain markham fans but we feel certain that if all true facts of the case were fully understood by the public no blame could be justly placed on either ourselves or the players involved i do hope that as the season progresses differences may be forgotten i can see no good reason why our two tat in the interest of good i towns union ville rri ont jan 21 1919 sports editor stouffville tribune stouffville ont dear sir with regard to what you choose to call a disgusting display of fan animosity displayed by a section of the markham spectator i should like to take issue in the first place i was under the impression that it was not a sec tion of the spectators as you suggest but a very healthy major ity of the markham fans in the second place if you were more conversant with the mark ham hockey situation you would realize that this torrent of unsportsmanlike taunts of which you so glibly speak was occasional not by these exmarkhamites deserting to another club that is their privilege but by the un sportsmanlike taunts to use your own words and the insinuations and animosity displayed by a certain couple of these individuals toward the boys they had played with and the fans who had sup ported them for so many years insofar as what you call un sportsmanlike taunts are con cerned i might mention that on wednesday night i and a few other markham fans found our selves in the midst of a very pro- stouffville rooting section we could hear nothing but cries of drop that man cut him down and get soando directed at the stouffville players this is not intended as a criticism of stouff ville fans they paid for their own tickets but merely serves to illustrate the fatility of failing to sweep off ones own doorstep before going to work on a neigh bours in closing i should like to ask as who calls himself a dis gusted markham fan if he saw the two games markham played against bell ac and lindsay be fore meeting stouffville since he describes himself as an ardent and loyal follower of the markham hockey team for many years i must assume that he did and there fore cannot help knowing that dur ing these two scheduled games only one minor penalty was imposed during 120 minutes of hockey since this colleged markham fan is obviously trying to put the onus for rough play on the mark ham club i should like to suggest mr as consult the penalty markham win from toronto meteors 63 paced by harry milroy who tired two goals and chalked up an assist markham millionaires registered their fifth the visitors on monday night however the northerners were a game bunch of lads and slapped in a goal every time the homesters lapsed around the net while probably the best ice of the season was enjoyed the hockey was not of a very high- class variety particularly the opening twenty minutes bobcay geon played a slapping up the boards brand of hockey and the clippers were inclined to go along with them ernie nichols was the star for the haliburton boys copping four of his teams six goals kimble and jacket were the other marksmen for bobcaygeon for stouffville no less than three players performed the hattrick scoring three goals each don smith vic sluce and bill johnston defenceman hochberg collected two goals les clarke geo rum- ney and bob lawrie each one bodychecking was heavy but clean and although referee crosby handed out thirteen penalties most of them were for slashing and tripping the clippers absorbed seven of the penalties and bob caygeon six stouffville played without to the teams and fans alike having two clubs so close together now for a few words about our own stouffville clippers much care was taken to gather together a young team a group of boys that are on their way up in the hockey world not on their way out our team was not built for one season only but for the years ahead we did not hope or expect to ice a championship team for this year all we could hope for was a team that would be pleasing to the fan the record speaks for itself fortunately the markham club has a large following of genuinely loyal fans with no axes to grind if mr as were of their type hockey in markham would have been extinct long ago if the players the fans and more particularly the press would desist from pouring oil on ahead v troubled waters and deliberately stirring
