an acclamation was accorded to three councillors in markham township when just the right number qualified on tuesday following the nomination meeting in unionville monday afternoon they are harry from there will be a threecornered contest for the reeveship with reeve vera griffin being opposed by charlie hooper whom he defeated last year and by albert reesor a former deputy reeve who was defeated several years ago on his way up the municipal ladder election day falls on monday dec 13 and the candidates will have a statement to make in our next issue on dec 9 1 would earmark any warden for 1949 a close race is predicted between frank disney and dr n e mc- ewen for the office of deputy- reeve frank disney has had four years experience as councillor dr n e mcewen has held the office of deputyreeve for 1948 this years councillors milt burk and clare balsdon are seek ing reelection along with george todd former councillor and con tender for the deputy reeveship in 1947 miss violet swan is the fourth ratepayer seeking a council seat miss swan has sought elec tion on two previous occasions voting day is next monday dec gill and polls will be open 10 am until 8 pm from holsteins top 415 at public auction over at edgeley the other day prices for purebred holstein cows soared to dizzy heights auctioneer a s fanner declared it was one of the most successful cow sales in a long time so far as his sales are concerned the best cow sold for 115 and her calf ten days old 120 the 30 head of cattle all pure bred holsteins realized 10000 and the sale which opened at 215 was closed at 120 oclock indicating a rapid turnover the cows alone averaged 2s5 and the cows and calves lumped together averaged 240 fowl bingo friday night may be election in whitchurch twp there are strong indications that reeve l p evans of whitchurch announced his retirement a year ago to take place at the end of this year is likely to change his mind and seek reelection at the forthcoming january election in that township mr evans was one of the county commissioners in 19 is it is reported that he will state the reason for changing his mind on the matter of retirement when he gets before the ratepayers at the nomination in the township hall on monday dec 27 deputy reeve e logan is under stood to be seeking the reeveship and the senior member of council l j harper is looking at the office cf deputy reeveship with more than keen interest however if these individuals anticipated an acclamation they may now see a contest in the offing if the report is correct that reeve evans intends to seek reelection mr evans was accorded an acclamation back in 1910 on retirement of the late george leary and again in 1917 and 1918 he was given acclamations councillor fred timbers is also being urged to seek a stepup for deputyreeve but all this is only township talk where will it lead two new men added to public school board one new ceme tery commissioner pay likely for councillors the entire stouffville municipal council slate was returned to office by acclamation at the annual nominating meeting on friday evening reeve a v nolan con sented to hold office for another term along with his four council lors henry ogden glenn ratcliff clayt baker and john scott the public school trustees were also elected by acclamation being w f riches former chairman of the board of education and two new members to municipal office reg stouffer and len wilkes the one new cemetery commissioner is harmon hoover nominations were as follows for reeve henry ogden a v xolan for council harold spofford henry ogden clayt baker glenn rat- cliff john scott and reg stouffer for public school trustee w f riches reg stouffer len wilkes for cemetery commissioner har mon hoover although not a large crowd con sidering the population of stouff ville the small municipal hall was well filled for the public meeting following the nominations reeve nolan told the gathering that stouffville was one of three municipalities in the county of york which had reduced the tax rate this year or even retained the previous rate he dealt at some length on the setting up of a fire area with whit church township and revealed that the local brigade had fought ten whitchurch fires this year for which they received 40 per fire the town also receives 250 stand by time for the equipment as far as i know markham village is the only other place in york county where the councillors receive no remuneration for their services stated the reeve in referring to the suggestion that councillors here be paid he told the ratepayers that there had not been time enough to set up the water and hydro commis sion as proposed and took the blame for allowing the matter to lapse it is time the councillors here were whitchurch markham vil lage and stouffville appoint one member by reason of their popu lation being under 3000 while markham township appoints two because the population is over 3000 under departmental regulations for establishing a high school board the public school board having the largest attendance in grades i to viii inclusive in the year 1947 may appoint a repre sentative to the area board it was not known until last week whether stouffville or markham had this appointment to make according to advice received from inspector mackillop by mr h o klinck secretary of the local board the appointment falls to stouffville the attendance at this sciiool for year 1917 showed an average of 1s7 and markham 170 the name of the area says inspector mackillop shall be known as the stouffvillemarkham high school area board mr ewart stiver has been chosen as the county of york representative on the board vandorf subway to be built in the spring the toronto and york roads commission reported to the county council that the board of transport commissioners had ordered the cnr to pay 45 per cent of the cost of construction of the vandorf subway in whitchurch township the total estimated cost of the sub way will be 104000 of which the province will pay 45760 toronto and york county will pay the balance the report said the work will be started in the spring mrs truman
