ratepayers association to have pickering taxbills collected for return to the court of revision was voted down tuesday night at a meeting of some 100 south picker ing citizens the meeting was called with the primary object of protest ing assessment increases but it branched out into many phases finally a motion by s a smith was adopted to form a pickering town ship ratepayers association the stormy meeting lasted almost four hours with questions being fired at the county assessor ralph wilson of whitby until a motion was put through confining questions to those of a general nature rather than personal complaints reeve w ii wesiney explained the factors which caused the cur rent high taxes and deputy reeve mcewen predicted taxes would even be still higher he addressed the rate payers as fellow suff erers and drew a smile councillor clare balsdori of pick ering supported the facts given by rapidly recovering the reeve and deputy but council lor frank disney of claremon launched an attack upon the coun tys equalized assessment poor up there many of our people up there retired with a little hit of money just 23000 or so mr disney said drawing an unexpected laugh from the audience he stated that thd current assessment is too hard on them he blamed his own township council for bringing on the tax collection three months earlier taxes are due now in september supervising assessor ralph wil son gave a short outline of the re assessment system which had been begun two years ago many jieopic were not assessed fairly and many were not assessed at all this work ha been done by a manual whichlconfereree mr wilson compiled giving classi fications of houses a reason for certain evaluations as a result the eountv assesment has increased im s262s3151 to 31369637 this year former warden mac forsyth made a lengthy speech in which he this will prove to be a record year for the laying of new water mains in stouffville small pipe had been laid in past years which have been taken up and replaced with permanent mains while a new line is being laid from mill to church streets at the rear of the stores on uie north side of main under present circumstances a break in the small pipe feeding ths north side stores would entail aa mrs david russel of markham is almost impossible task to lay or repair a pipe line under the busi ness area having served these stores for many years small pipes leading from the big main on tiie south side of the street may be getting at the end of its days and when a break occurs it will now bo possible to service these stores from the rear the new water rate- instituted two years ago is provid ing the funds to do this work which was not possible to do heretofore on the meagre income from the water system with the work being accomplished without the necessity of borrowing money it is certain that water rates in stouffville need never be increased above the present level which is one of the very lowest in the whole province to apply for a notice of motion before a county judge by the trustees to determine the deduc tion the village may receive from the township rates said mr rae the hearing he said would be o thursday sept 8 mr holls beckett has been engaged to look after the interest of unionville mr rae told the gathering of some 75 ratepayers half of whom were women visibly agitated that the only way out in order to get a little consideration and less stub bornness by the reeve is this notice of motion he charged that the clerk chas hoover mis represents the issue he tells rate payers s1000 was spent on our roads doesnt say that half this is recoverable from the dept of highways he stops short of that continued mr rae ken watson and writ bradley other two trustees were at the head table supporting the speaker mr rae outlined dealing with various councils beginning back in 1911 when unionvilles net rate was 3 mills the speaker proceeded to tell of a meeting trustees had with mark ham council last april to discuss the rate they were asking us ti pay full township rate whereas before we paid 1 mills to the general rate a second meeting was held in june he said when we thought we had reached agreement with the village agreeing to a rate of 2 mills council right then retired discussed the issue came back and said they must have 3 mills and we agreed to that there were other issues involved such as the 6th concession but the three mills were agreed to by all six weeks later mr rae said he was called again by the township and attended a meeting thinking it was merely to iron out the actual word ing of what had been previously agreed on to my surprise i was informed council wanted hi mills and we flatly refused we learned councils word wasnt as good as its bond mr rae told his audience union ville had paid in between l0oj and 5000 taxes in recent year- more than their share but that th3 loss is not recoverable only immediate redress can be hoped r by appealing to the judge holding up a sheet of township expenditures mr rae said the list of expenses submitted on the state- offer of settlement in the meantime unless it lie entirely to the satisfac tion of the trustees councillor harry barber defend ed his position over the alleged dis crepancy or discrimination between the rate given thornhill and union ville by saying that he had moved in council to deal with thornhill at the same time as unionville but this since early in the year mr rae called on deputy reeve d rumney for information on certain work the deputy said he could not answer offhand and mr udell of stouflville he was born jn rae retorted you cant answer mv stouffville and was in his late 80s question it appears township i he attended public school in ux- councillors have a ring in their bridge and was married
