son publishers notes and comments fire on farms can be desolating suntimes owen sound while the widespread installation of electricity in our rural sections has done much to reduce farm fire hazards the arrival of the late fall and winter livestock feeding seasons brings about the great danger period again many farmers are still without electric lighting facilities and must therefore continue to use the oldfashioned lanterns some improvements have been made in some types of these lanterns and lamps but for the most part they continue to be the same old fire menace which such open flames cannot help but be great care is needed when using lanterns the wise farmers have hooks here and there throughout their stables where the lights can be hung with complete safety there are however still those who take the chance of setting them down on the stable floor or on some barrel or box from which they may easily be brushed off by either man or beast setting the building on fire fire is particularly a tragedy on the farm not only are lives and homes endangered by conflagrations but the very livelihood of the farmers and their families as well at this season of the year the complete years work is in the barns on most farms- that is the hay the grain the roots etc are practically all stored in them along with the pigs some of the cattle horses and other livestock within a short time now all livestock with the possible exception of sheep will be housed in the stables if fire hits the great part of the livestock as well as all the crops will probably be lost and in many cases much of the farm machinery there are many ruins of stables and barns still showing evidences of fires to be found through this as well as any other farm district to prove just what a tragedy such farm fires are many farmers have had to abandon their lifes work under such circumstances many farms have been turned into grassland as they sold cheaply following the burning of barns or homes or both despite the strong attachments which grow between the farmers and their land the victims of these fires in many cases are unable to carry on and are forced to move to town or city where they must eke out the remainder of their lives at some inferior job railway costs up in a statement reviewing the financial position of the canadian national railways for the year coming to a close president r c- vaughan presented a strong case for upward revision of freight rates to help meet mounting costs he said that although revenues will total about 436883000 largest gross for any peacetime year in the systems history net return will be lower than in 1946 mr vaughan said the systems payroll in 1947 was 22184603 more than in 1946 railway materials rose 128 per cent in canada fuel costs increased 4230000 and snow removal costs were 1900000 greater than in the previous year in 1947 payroll and materials cost the company in excess of 100000000 more than they would have cost at 1939 rates while railway costs have risen sharply as in every other business and the tendency is still upward freight rates have not been increased for about 20 years spinach like hay there is another theory about spinach besides the usual one of healthgiving properties according to dr thurman b rice of the indiana state board of health it has about the same nutritional value as hay and if it were good for you nature would have given it some sort of pleasant flavor he thinks there may even be some danger in eating it because of its high content of oxalic acid it only goes to show how hard it is to get experts to agree on anything even on the value of such a simple food as spinach gets 65 daily john pristow scarcely dreamed when he emigrated to canada from poland several years ago that the dominion would hold such bright promises as it does today pristow commenced farming operations at leduc in alberta north of edmonton he had not been there many years when oil was discovered shortlv afterward a well gushed on his property and since first eruption has been returning him royalties of 65 daily the oil well is one of five brought in recently in that rich agricultural section of alberta this casing edward littik agixoourt txssks ix 81st year widely known resident of the township of searboro in the agincourt district william little died at his home there last week in his slst year all his long iife since manhood mr little was an elder in melville presbyterian church agincourt and is a brother of mr arthur little well known around agincourt and a frequent visitor among friends in pickering town ship early in 195s it is hinted in well- informed quarters along parlia ment hill the big news out of ottawa will be more closely related to the developments in washington and london than in any other period since the exciting days of the last war as the effects are felt not only by the govern ments but by the masses in these countries from the european recovery plan the new british food agreements and the new trade treaty now in the marking between canada and the united states it is known in this capital that reports reaching here indicate clearly that the masses across canada are obviously bewildered by the effects of temporary import bans or restrictions by longrange as well as revolutionary plans for the reorientation of the economy and the complications arising from the british food agreements with forecasts suggesting still higher prices in the cost of living for the masses briefly and in ordinary every day language it can be reported that the socalled austerity pro gram in canada started towards the end of 1947 may have a much shorter existence judging from what can be heard backstage in ottawa since the canadian government pegged the dollar with the us dollar at 100 cents for official pur poses there has been a flat rejee tion by spokesmen for the govern- ment of devaluation but this has not caused a discontinuation of the prediction that sooner or later action may not be forced on account of the real value being quoted in the eighties in us particularly if the british pound sterling or french franc are devalued as rumored persistently it is said here that devaluation may beforced under such circumstances and it may be difficult if not impossible to keep the canadian dollar arti ficially pegged very long after such happenings with prices possibly too high in world markets as com petition becomes keener than ever for exports behind the stories of soaring butter prices and the recent wave of demands for a proper ceiling it can be disclosed that telegrams were received here in sharp pro test against the consistent boosting of these prices by distributors with the precedent established by the government in reimposing price ceilings on certain canned goods having been considered the moti vating influence in bringing this wave of protest apparently once again it has been shown that when a precedent is set it starts a cycle of actions most difficult to stop and this has occurred in regard to butter prices those who failed to comply with the terms of their undertakings are being followed up and will be returned to agricultural employ ment as soon as possible remark ed deputy minister of labor arthur macnamara discussing the default ing 34 polish war veterans from their agreements by which they came to canada for farm work at the present time domestic supplies of fruits and vegetables are adequate and there is no serious threat for the moment to nutri tional standards if available foods are used to the best advantage continued health minister martin on reports about the illeffects of the ban on such imports from the us so far the reaction among the clerical grades in the civil service in this capital lias been satisfaction with the pay increases and now comparable boosts are expected for the higher grades in the public ser vice the auditor general of canada watson sellar has criticized the payment without parliamentary consent of over 350000 to the uk in connection with wartime ship ments of aluminum according to his annual report to the government stories heard along parliament hill claim that canadian customs officers are keeping a closer watch than ever before on possible border smugglers due to the import restrictions not merely for the us dollars but for jewellery textiles etc a tiff warning has been given here than canadians are going to get a sharp reduction in their fuel oil supplies even if some people do not seem to take this hint seriously in face of the requests that it be continued for some little timel excess profits taxation will be history after it had lapsed dec 311 1947 with this wartime creation having brought an estimated over two billion dollars
