lee highly respected tragedy struck the village of ciaremont late friday night when albert lee lifelong resident of the community was found outside his home with a shot gun wound through the heart and lungs ac cording to information told the po lice the unfortunate man had on various occasions threatened to shoot himself but his remarks were never taken seriously by the house keeper however he is said to have said the same thing late friday night and shortly after went out side a shot was heard when mr richard cooper another occupant of the house ran out and found mr lee lying about 16 feet from the gun death must have been instan taneous son of thos lee of ciaremont albert spent all his life in the com munity and was well thought of he had been emploved for 15 years by the township of pickering and at time of his death was operating a towhshi- truck he was a good workman and gave excellent satis faction to his employers the funeral on monday was large ly attended service being conduct ed by rev i e kennedy assisted by rev l wenham interment was made in ciaremont cemtery brougham hard time to fill teaching staff ciaremont continuation school has experienced diflicutv in imperial oil co despite the reduced staff school is held as usual mr john david son of greenbank was engaged but just prior to taking on his new duties mr davidson was taken ill so that the school is still short- handed we understand the sug gestion has been made that the students be transported to stouff ville for the time being and that mrs laushway could carry on with the stouffville staff the idea was said to be aceptable to stouffville board and principal but no defin ite word is forthcoming as to whe ther such a plan will materialize faces charge over unemployment fund charged with obtaining unem ployment insurance by making false statements william a knox of brougham came up for hearing at whitby last week and the case was remanded until this week after considerable evidence had been heard the government was prose cuting the case there were ave charges of the indictment in which claims were made that between september 1945 and april 1946 the accused had drawn unemployment insurance while he was operating a general store in brougham investigators gave evidence that knox had made an application for unemployment benefits and had received cheques covering the weekly amounts they also showed that knox had a license to buy un employment insurance stamps as an employer and their subsequent investigation showed that he had been owner of a general store in brougham defence witnesses knox his wife and his son said that the accused had purchased the store as a busi ness for his son then in the army and soon to go overseas they further stated that knox who had been employed at ajax previously had left the managment of the store to his wife had only helped occasionally with the business and had taken no money from the con cern in fact the evidence given was that he had paid the taxes and mortgage interest out of his own funds the case gives rise to the unfair ness of the unemployment insur ance many people were made to pay this insurance at ajax who had no hope of gaining any benefit from the payment people like house wives and elderly men who were retired from work but had gone to ajax to help out in an emergency it was generally understood that there housewives and others would draw a percentage of their pay ment when unemployed sound opinion is that they never should have been assessed in the first place of course this opinion is no reflection on
