their wives along at countrys expense with the government at ottawa forcing income tax from persons making as low as s660 and 1200 per annum it is no wonder that these people fairly seeth with indigna tion when they learn that the same government not only paid travell ing expenses to a couple of judges touring canada but provided funds for the wives of the judges to go along with them the matter was brought up in parliament last week when someone questioned hon mr ilsley on the fact and lie con fessed it was right and that it was unusual judge gboconnor chairman of the war labour board and judge mbarchibald chairman of the national labor board received substantial salaries also expenses for themselves including travel ing and living costs and for then- wives mr ilsley admitted that the expenses were paid at a certain stage the treas ury board made up its mind this type of remuneration should be cut out and when other cases started to come before us where a similar arrangement was recommended by a department we sent them back and said either pay them more per day or do something but dont pay the wifes expenses there are two or three judges in exactly compar able circumstances who were paid on that basis after all it does not make much difference financially amazing situation angis maclnnis of vancouver said it was amazing that one in judge archibalds position chair man of
