upon which it was given over the counter as a gesture of good faith by what was intended as a favour to accommodate a fellow mortal who had supposedly lost his ticket and was in dire need of his overcoat to protect him against winters blast mr damm was now the established victim of a hoax who had no idea whatever who the two strangers were who had so completely tricked him he never theless made it known that he would present the price of the miss ing apparel to mr siegfried a little later that evening chief of police gilchrist and pro officer bob france espied a chariot proceeding east along durham street in what the latter officer described in the witness box as a very careless man ner they took chase and following the suspicious car which continued to increase its speed finally approached within a distance of about feet from its rear from the windows of the pur sued machine to the great dismay and consternation of the officers there then began to pour forth a barrage of molitoff cocktails that would have been devastating to the constables tires had they not driven their vehicle more in a manner re sembling a ballet dancer to escape the fragments of broken beer bottles which covered the macadam the arm of the law however had as much wind left in their inner tubes as they had in their lungs when they a little later beckoned the fleeing machine to a halt the two occupants of the car had failed in their attempt to destroy evidence of their cargo of spirits as the officers in searching the glass strewn roadway recovered a bottle of beer intact which the accused had tossed from their car if being lodged in the county goal to await their trial in police court on friday dec 14th was not such a surprise to the accused pair who no doubt had time to reflect on thpir conduct of the previous even ing they were it is safe to state presented with the surprise of their lives when who should serve them with their breakfast in their cell at the bruce county bastile the follow ing morning but assistant jailer george damm who also happened to be the clerk of the coat check room at the town flail dance the previous night they will now answer the theft charge one of the pair at ieasl the coat was recovered these are happier new year tidings than we could bring a year ago so together lets rejoice that peace is again with us and on this first
