his aiscipies during his earthly ministry- but he contemplates an everwidening -sphere- of blessing and influence as he speaks of those who should believe on him through tneir word following the first great church council at jerusalem a- message which was a very definite recognition of the unity of the whole church on earth was sent out by the apostles and elders there assembled to the churches of gentiles these churches had been brought into being largely through the ministry of paul and barnabas vul were to labor together for the good of the whole company and as witnerses for christ in their various communities thus they were ex horted to be careful as to their be havior so conducting themselves that they would not hinder then- testimony by inconsistent lives which would throw discredit upon the very message of the gospel which they sought to proclaim verse by verse john 1720 neither oray i for these alone up to this point the lord had heen prayinf for his dis ciples iwho had continued with him during his ministry nowhe turns to intercede for those in all after centuries who should believe on him through the testimony these handed down whether oral or vrittn verse 21that they all may be one that the world may believe in verse 11 we have th unity of life here it is unity in testimony and fellowship for which our lord prays as his own manifest this unitv the world is definitely im pressed and so men are led to be lieve in christ for themselves where believers are quarrelsome and so open the door to strife and division they defeat their cwn pur pose and destroy the power of their witness to the unsaved verse 22 the glory which thou gavest me i have given them with his essential glory which he had with the father from eternity past christ jfesus cannot part this can not be communicated to anyone else v 5 but the glory that he has acquired as son of god in humiliation he delights to share with his own that they may be manifestly one with him in the day of his appearing- verse 23 that they may be madeperfect in one that the world may know- it will not then be a question of faith but of sightwhen the world beholds the redeemed in manifested unity in glory with christ- they will then know that he was the sent oneof the father ind that all hissaints are loved by god himself even as he i loves his son acts 15 22 then pleased it the apostles and ielderswith the whole church to send chosen men of their own company to antioch this was a remarkable expression of the real ity of the tie that links together be lievers in christ after debating and settling the question of theigentile churches relation to the enactments of the law of moses the represent atives of the judean churchessent special commissioners to antioch to make known their decision and to assure them of their aporoval and loyingiinterest n verse 23 they wrote letters which thev despatched to send greeting to these newly made christians thus assuring them of their recognition of that unity of fellowship for which jesus had praved verse 24 certain which went out from us subverting your souls to whom we gave no such commandment the leaders in jerusalem backed by ihe church as a whole disavowed any responsi bility for the legal teachings qf the emissaries of a judaizirig system who had represented themselves as sent by the church to enforce jewish observances upon the gentile converts verse 25 r seemed good unto us being assembled with one accord to send chosen men unto you paul and barnabas were returning to antioch they did so as fully endorsed by the older aposties and leaders and accom panied by the two from jerusalem who could- vouch for ithe declara tions made verse 26 men that have hazard ed their lives for the name of our lord jesus christ it was thus they spoke of the two who had labored so long and earnestly in antioch it must have been a great encouragement to paul and barna bas to find themselves so fervently endorsed- though we know from what pauls tells us in galatians 2 that there were still some questions that were far from settled but at least any real cleavage had been avoided and fellowship was main tained i verse 27 we have sent judas and silas who shall also tell you the same things by mouth this judas is not otherwise known nor identified in scripture but silas afterward became the associate of paul when barnabas and he parted company v 40 verse 28 it seemed good to the holy ghost and to us they had sought guidance of the spirit and firmly believing he had led them u- unanimity of judgement they spoke with confidence it means much tobe thus led by him who has come to earth to be the vice- gerent of christ verse 29 that ye cbstaln enrinr that old evils ever associat ed with idolatry might have a tend ency to be condoned even by some who were new christians- the letter embodied ah exhortation to avoid meats offered to idols see pauls teaching as to this in 1 cor 8 and from blood note gen 94 which included in the noahlc covenant and has never been repealed and from fornication a term whlch covers all illicit sexual relations if the gentile believer was careful as to these things he and his hebrew christian brother- could walk to gether in real fellowship the heart of the lesson it takes much mutual forbearance vandorf crowded out last week mrs roy morley sdent a few days last week with
