thinning and using trees with few exceptions trees are best pruned at the beginning of the growing season one exception the maple box elder which bleeds or loses sap freely through recent cuts or wounds when the first movement of sap takesplace in the spring the actual time that prun ing in general may be undertaken in spring is only relative but the work should be attended to as early in spring as possible after the danger of severe frosts or cold weather is past says john walker superintendent dominion forest nursery station indian head sask in publication 770 on prun ing thinning and utilizing trees just issued by the dominion de partment of agriculture it is not advisable to prime frozen stems the best time to prune them is just as the buds are opening or bursting if much prun ing is to be done necessarily an early start must be made to avoid carrying the piuning too far into bldlat s lake -x- dutch ekopiie clean and tidy lorraine parker pretty daughter of mr and mrs spring growth lv important in the life of woody plants pruning in the early spring- and at the start of the growing season has- two important advantages the cut can be made where a vigorous bud is located and from which strong growth in the direction re quired may be expected also wounds and cuts particularly small ones made through the removal of small branches will be well on the way to being covered overor heal ed by the development of new bark before the end of the growing sea son in pruning the time factor is important and both advantages mentioned contribute much to the development of healthy well- shaped troesvwith smooth branches and trunks on the other hand pruning should not be done unless the pruning will serve some specific and useful purpose there is much more useful in formation in the publication which can be obtained free from the dominion department of agricul ture ottawa curtailed by lack of labor materials the usual spring building pro gram at musselmans lake provincial candidate election day june 4th major a hz woods i federal candidate j electionday v- june 11th there are two main reasons why certain trees in established wood- lots an4- shelterbelts should be cut down and made use of before they die says john walker superinten dent forest nursery stationlndian head sask these reasons are 1 wood of trees that have died has less value as fuel than wood of trees cut green and properly dried or seasorfed 2 nothing is to be gained by leaving in established woodlots and shelterbelts trees which are at a standstill so far as further development is concerned in the case of shelterbelts if the value of trees in providing adequate shelter is impaired it is sound economy to arrange to set out a new shelterbelt prior to removing the old trees woodlots and shelter- belts should be thought of as farm crops yielding harvest within more or less definite periods and as such new crops must be started occasionally management of any woodlot or shelterbelt does not- call for cutting the whole planting at one time the recommended plan is that only those trees which are definitely the weakest or those which reduced growth has rendered easy victims todisease or insect attacks should be cut at intervals of about five years the growth of the remain ing trees will be stimulated this thinning out may be at any convenient season of the year but having n mind the best use of the removed material two specific periods are suggested trees intended for fuel only should be removed in the fall or winter so that the wood- in trunks and branches may dry out in summer and be ready for burning in the following winter a second suitable time is- early spring when poles ititended for fence posts are best cut before the spring movement of sap begins where the poles are to be treated with bluestone or other greenrut treatment cutting in the early spring is essential for best results which work is proceeding at the present time ths weather has not been much of an inducement for city folks to leave warm homes as yet and go to the lakeside but early improve ment may bring a few more build ers out before the summer season opens tribune
