their son kenneth killed in action in france on july 9th kenneth was a member of the queens own rifles and went over seas two years ago hewastwenty years old and was born on the present homestead attending the webb school as a lad the family had had no definite word that their son was with the invasion forces although letters from neighboring boys made them believe that he might be there left and daughter were in claremont during the weekend visiting with mrs buttons par ents mr and mrs r e forsyth the button family recently arriv ed from the west mr and mrs harry porter and mr and mrs thos gregg enjoyed a motor trip to peterborough and points north on sunday miss bessie graham and stuart graham who is in the army were at their home here during the weekend mr and mrs robt little and grandson jack of toronto were weekend visitors with mr and mrs c a overland mr little is a brother of mrs overland miss bernice overland also of toronto is- spending this week here with aunt and uncle messrs earl beare and john badgerow were after the finny tribe at lake simcoe over the weekend we are told but results of the expedition were not disclos ed the little son of mr and mrs ross watson 4th con of uxbridge who sustained the mangled fin gers in a neighbors cutting box last week was expected home from the sick childrens hospital this week severely burned the little son of mr and mrs burnell here was painfully burn ed one day last week when along with other playmates he came in contact with a tin of lye the boys had opened the tin and some of the contents spilled on the chest of the burnell lad his companion was only slightly injured minister leaving rev w ii bexton pastor in the baptist church here will- relin quish his charge in the fall and take up teaching duties at the un iversity of toronto it is under stood mr and mrs bexton have only occupied the parsonage for a short time and claremont folks will regret their departure rev bexton has been taking a course at the university during his short pastorate here i using a combine many acres of wheat will come down this week according to many of the farmers- who visited the village on monday fields on the farms of john scott and jos em- pringham were cut last week an idea for the use- of the combine has been introduced which might prove popular with those who are still rather skeptical regarding the value of these new machines it has 1 always been contended by many- that a good deal of grain is lost through the necessity of let ting it ripen so long before the combine can be used a device can now be placed or your combine which will harvest the crop after you have cut- it with the mower andtherarrangement is said- to be working outi satisfactorily on farms west of here i brougham mr and mrs c7hart also eva and jack have returned home after spending a pleasant holiday with friends at owen sound mr and mrs paynter and earl have been visiting with friends at belleville mrs r miller and billy visited her parents wm and mrs knox on sunday mr dean mairs is improving the appearance of his property by building a cement block garage at the rear of his store mrs wallace ellicott and little daughter returned to their home in toronto after spending a week with mr and mrs wm ellicott wedding bells are again ring ing in our midst several families from this dis trict were at whitevale attending decoration services mr t c brown does not im prove as fast as his many friends would wish the womens institute held their regular meeting on tuesday afternoon at the beautiful home of mr and mrs winton white with a good attendance the min utes of the previous meeting were read and adopted a donation of ten dollars was received from a friend it was decided to add fifteen dollars to this donation and send twentyfive dollars to jam for britian fund at the close of the business a contest of words and meanings was held in which all took part the hostesses mrs white crawford birrell and mil ler seived a dainty lunch from tables set on the beautiful var- anda mr and mrs m hamilton visit ed with her brother mr george burton of gormley congratulations to mr and mrs browes helen dewitt devine bea- verton that their son sgt a f devine was killed in italy on july 10 dr devine is warden of ontario county sgt devine enlisted in the can- hdm devitt saturday brick rev r w- mcvey officiated at a pretty summer wedding in greenwood united church on sat urday july 15 when helen m devitt only daughter of carl and mrs devitt of brougham formerly of greenwood was united in marr iage to elmer john bud browes son of mr and mrs john browes of west hill the church which was tastefully decorated with summer flowers by girl friends of the bride formed a lovely setting mr william devitt brother of the bride was at the organ through out the ceremony miss eva poaps of toronto and miss marjorie byers cousin of the bride sang0 promise me given in marriage by her father the bride was lovely in a long floor length brocaded ivory satin gown with long sleeves and sweet heart neckline her finger tip veil was of embroidered net caught in cap style she carried small sweetheart roses and babys breath the brides attendants miss lor- aine leslie of toronto wore a powder blue silk jersey with white lace dutch cap and powder blue veil and carried a sheaf of summer flowers little miss barbara gray cousin of the bride was flower girl- in pale pink sheer with headdress of pale blue and pink forget-me- nots she carried a nosegay of summer flow ers mr victor turrell attended the groom as best man usher were john devitt younger brother of the bride and norman browes nephew of the groom the reception was held in the basement of the church the brides mother received in powder blue crepe dress with corsage of sweet peas while the grooms mother wore mauve silk jersey and sweet peas after the usual- toasts the groom presented the bride with- a lovely engraved gold locket a signet
