taylor and family farmers arobusy buzzing wood and making maple syrup there will be no snap election in ontario mr drew says there will be no election until changes are made in the law regarding votes for men and women in the armed forces which cannotbe until the next session of the legislature that is the substance of a statement made by the premier on march 30 it arose out of a resolution placed on the order paper by opposition leader joliffe the motion- declar ed that every qualified elector and everv woman and man in our arm ed forces is entitled to a vote in any election to be held in ontario and that the provisions of existing legislation with respect to elections are inadequate and unsatisfactory it called for the setting up of a select committee of the legislature to recommend necessary amend ments to be considered at this ses sion the premier suggested that the committee would be able to do bet ter if it waited until the dominion government had decided- what it was going to do about taking the active service vote in a federal election he proposed that the spec ialcommittee be empowered to sit after this session is over to go into the whole matter of election mach inery very thoroughly and report back at a later session the suggest ion was gladly accepted by all the parties in the house mr drew con cluded by saying it is not the in tention of this government to call an election without dealing with this extremely important matter arthur williams ccf ontario tangled with the speaker on the bill to extend the federal labour code to all industry in ontario arthur is a good but provocative speaker- and the speaker of the house is always after him and me too on this occasion he asked arthur to retract and arthur kept asking the speaker what he was to re tract until finally mr joliffe ap pealed from- the speakers rul ing which wasustained by all the members but the ccf voting with the government older members of the house said it was the first time since 1934 that the speakers ruling had been questioned out loud at any rate i have seen sever al noted speakers preside at ottawa but none of them wanted to have perfect order all the time they allowed crossfiring between members so long as what was said was within the rules this method makes for a very dull house in deed much wit and wisdom would have been lost and a member like sam jacobs liberal mp from montreal would have never become famous a legislature is not a school room when the governments munici pal health services bill came up for third reading mr joliffe moved that final action be postponed till interested parties such as the federation of agriculture and or ganized labour had an opportunity of expressing their opinion how ever the suggestion was not accept ed the government asked for a vote and their bill carried and speaking of health dr vivian minister of health gave us some startling figures particularly about venereal disease more than 50000 cases of venereal disease have broken out in ontario since the war began he said the govern ment proposed grants in aid to the municipalities probably on a coun ty basis to set up public health services which would deal not only with venereal disease but with tub erculosis acute communitable dis ease sanitation handling of food and other public health problems a great many members took part in the debate caused by the govern ments action in extending the fed eral labour code for war indus tries to all industries the govern ment took the view that it was the only thing to do when industry is part war and part peace time work the opposition taking the position that for factories engaged in con sumer production a model labour code could be used now and after the war extended to all industries the debate was stormy and long and isnt yet finished our old ontario farmers cancom- fort themselves with the thought that at least they dont have sul phur fumes to contend with as do those of their fellow farmers who live near the international plants in sudbury and nippissing the international people built very high chimneys to carry off the fumes but this just results in the damage being- done further away some times as far as fifty miles if the sulphur fumes blow over the fields everything green dies the farmers are compensated by their mpps but not to the full extent of their loss there is going to be a great push to finish the session by easter which means friday of this week indeed ever since the session met there has been a disturbing sense of urgency as though we were working against time i cannot see why if easter must be closing time then we should meet by january 15 this is a large province with many people and six weeks is too short a time for the parliament of this
