dftt -sw- the tribune stouffvilleont thursday dec 23rd 1943 t if i established 1888 member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and ontario quebec newspapers association issued every thursday at stouffville ontario eight to twelve pages average paid circulation 1900 subscription rates per year in advance in canada 200 in usa 3260 a v nolan son publishers notes and comments there are no new sins there is perhaps no sounder or wiser counsel to young people than that which is given by dorothy dix whose col umn appears in hundreds of daily newspapers on this con tinent take this for example a distraught mother wrote to dorothy dix on the fol lowing strain i have a very attractive daughter who has had a good environment all her life and devoted parents yet she does things and has ideas that distress her father and me very much she resents our every attempt to control her and calls us oldfashioned when we try to keep her from doing things of which we disapprove such as frequenting the apartment of two young men i tell her that can lead to no good and her answer is oh mother cant you come up to date 1 what can i do about it i we were very interested in the answer we quote you might tell your daughter it isnt virtue and decency that are oldfashioned it is wrongdoing there hasnt been a new sin invented since the fruit- eating experience in the garden of eden and it would be amusing if it were not so tragic that the young people of today think that they are the first people in all history of the world who ever strayed off the straight and narrow path everybody has always been doing it there isnt a frank sex novel hot from the press whose plot isnt fore shadowed in the ten commandments nor a vice that wasnt old when its warnings thundered from sinai j so why the youngsters think themselves so much more progressive- and adventurous and sophisticated than their elders because they break thelaws of god and man and defy conventions and covet their neighbors mates and have liaisons is hard to say it is all old stuff we continue quoting girls think they show how ultra modern they are when they boast about how many cocktails they can drink and about getting lit up like a christmas tree at a party but there is nothing new in a drunken woman generation after generation has seen the poor bleareyed straggle- haired frousy creatures stumbling along the streets mut tering to themselves or lying in the gutter in concluding dorothy dix says girls think they show how adventurous and high- spirited they are when they throw their caps over the wind mill and have affairs with married men and other men who cant or wont marry them but there is nothing new in im morality o for a good turnip how many times do you expect to enjoy turnip as a veg etable only to find that it is strong and disappointing to the taste something should be done to produce a finer qual ity table turnip the present crop is too uncertain and our own experience is that we have placed before us more poor quality than good quality turnip as a vegetable in a recent issue the tjara leader tells the interesting story of the production of the comparatively new turnip named the laurentian which was experimented with last year by james alexander of arran township and which bids fair to become exceedingly popular among the many farmers in bruce county who grow turnips mr alexander secured his pound of seed last spring from g r greer agricultural representative for bruce bring over those young farmers premier george drew is in britain now occupied chief ly with the business of establishing an ontario government office in london and with securing british outlets for ot- ario products in each of these endeavors the people of this province will wish him success there is opportunity there and it is fitting that the banner province of the dominion should undertake so far as it may within federal trade and customs policies its own export business before the last war the ontario office in old london was a busy centre and had much to do with the movement of our products into britain and with the export of young britons to ontario its revival should stimulate interest in this part of canada to our correspondents this is the season of the year when we wish each other the seasons compliments the tribune is anxious to wish such compliments to all its correspondents those faith ful writers who send in the news each week from the var ious centres what a great deal they contribute to the in terest in the paper everybody enjoys reading about what is going on in their home neighborhood and if it were not for the help of our country correspondents the tribune would be badly handicapped as it is the circulation now stands as one of the high est in the whole province for a paper published in towns up to 1600 population and we pass on much of this growth to the help given us by the army of people we have mentioned consequently when we are passing around our greetings this week here is a hearty wish and one that is very sin cere that our writers all of them may eryoy the best christmas they could wish to have and may the new year see each correspondent prepared to clean up on all the news in his or her district from week to week or as often as possible interest lacking orer municipal elections it is the conviction of the writer that the nomination meetings for townships of whitchurch and markham ux- bndge and pickering will be slimly attended on dec 27th there is a definite lack of interest in municipal affairs all over the country several things may be pointed to as con tributing to this lack of interest first we can lay it at the door of the old bogey lack of time everybody is so rushed there is no time to think about municipal affairs and those in office are permitted to carry on without even much criticism secondly we suggest there is little interest in forth coming municipal elections because every council is find ing it easy to finance on a tax rate that points downward if any at all and this at a time when taxes arceasy to pay everybody has more money and is able to meet the tat bill almost with a smjle as a result of this situation no notice is taken of what the municipal council is doing if you want to test this theory we suggest that you try boosting the tax rate sharp ly and youll find the ratepayers will perk up then- ears and if you cant make out a good case you will be voted out sunday school lesson lesson for dee 26th gods great love and his s gift golden text for god so loved tho world that ho gave his only bc- gotten son that whosoever bc- licvcth in him should not perish hut have everlasting lire john 310 lho lesson n a whole appioach to tho lesson the incarnation of tne eternal son was the prelude to not the accom modation of i ademption he became man that he might die as man he was fitted to be our kinsmanredee mer mankind was sold under sin and utterly unable to work out any plan of redemption but he who was god the son from eternity stooped in grace to take our humanity apart from sin into union with his deity in ordei that he might aot on our behalf and by giving his life a ransom set free from sin and its pen alty all who put their trust in him his virginbirth was foretold seven hundred years before it took place the very city in which this was to occur was named by another prophet at about the same time yet up to almost the very time of his predicted advent it seemed as though this prophecy could not be infilled mary his expectant mother was dwelling in nazareth far to the north of davids city but god moved the heart of the iroman emperor who was tho ruler of palestine and all other civilized lands to issue a de cree mat all the habitable lands should be taxed and that each per son must be registered for this tax ation in his or her own city this necessitated the journey of mary and joseph to bethlehem and there the holy child was born thus gods spo ken word so long ago was ful filled to the letter the birth of the lord jesus christ changed the whole course of human history hencoforth time was divided into two great cy cles beforo and after christ m by vero matt 21 there came wise men from the east we call these the magi which means the wise they are often spoken of as kings but no scripture warrants such a conclus- ion they were probably men given to the study of the stars who had learn ed fiom the prophecies of balaam and of daniel of the one who was to rise out of judah and have domin ion over all the earth the idea of their being kings may have been gatheied from psalm 7210 but the passage has reference to the mani festation of the kingdom at the se cond advent verse 2 where is he that is born king of the jews they took it for granted his own people would know as they had waited for centur ies foi him to appeal explaining what had brought them to jerusalem they said we have seen hisstar and aie come to worship him this seems to be a direct allusion to balaams woids veise 3 heiod was troubled and all jeiusalom with him no wonder that the suggestion that gods promised king was born al ready distressed ungodly herod who dreaded being deposed from the throne and punished for his count less oriines the leaders in jerusalem also feared to lose their power and wealth often illgotten it the mes siah were already among them verse 4 he demanded of them where christ should be born christ is the greek word for messiah both meaning the anointed to herod the king of he jews could be no other than the messiah for whose coming he was unprepared verse 5 in ibethlehem of judea for thus it is written by the pro phet without a moments hesitat ion tho scribes gave the name of the city which was to be the birthplace of gods king it is pathetic to note how familiar these men were with the scriptures yet no sense of the authority of the word of god over their own lives verse 6 thou bethlehem out of these shall come a governor that shall rule my people they turned to these words of mich and morasthite which were clear and plain not capable of two or more meanings like the heathen oracles and so answered tho question of the wise men though they did not know that the king had been born already verse 7 herod enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared he presumed that this had been coincident with the birth of the child and so he craftily sought to find out the probable present age of the babe not that he might ac knowledge him bnt that he might destroy him and so thwart the divine purpose veise s when e have found him biing me word again that i may come and worship him also the crafty hypocrite had no thought of worship in his mind but was schem ing already how he might destroy this mysterious child it was to bs satans direct effort to prevent the futillment of the prophecies con cerning christ he found in herod a willing servant to endeavor to carry out his plans verse 9 the star came and stood over where the young child was there is no reason to believe that this was the stable in which the lord jesus christ had been borne as some time had elapsed since the shepherds found him there veise 10 when they saw the star they rejoiced in some super natural way they were guided by a heavenly orb of which they had lost sight when they turned aside to go to jerusalem the place where they naturally expected to find the king verse 11 when they were come into the house they saw the young child evidently by the time of this event joseph had found a suitable home for mary and her babe to this house came the wise men bringing gifts of gold symbolizing the divine glory frankincense which in the old testament typified the perfection of christs humanity and myrrh which spoke of his death for myrrh was used in the embalm ing of the dead unconscious doubt less of the real significance of their gifts they brought them as a token of their adoration and regard verse 12 being warned of god they departed into their own country another way thus for the time being herod was thwarted he was not given the information ne had sought god spoke to these men as he had often done to others in the past in a dream warning them not to comply with herods request tlio heart of tho ioson it is a very solemn thing to be familiar with the letter of gods holy word and yet not be subject to its teaching this was the condl- ion of the scribes who could give herod such clear information as to where the king of the jews should be born and yet were not already to own his claims over their own lives today there are millions of people who keep christmas as a day of feasting and rejoicing presumably in honor of the saviours birth and yet have nevei yielded to him nor repented of the sins for which he came to die let us be sure that we do not have a mere intellectual knowledge of the facts of the nativ ity but that we have made room in our hearts for the saviour whose miraculous birth we recall with glad ness v a weekly editor looks at ottawa written iptiolv tm a wtkty nvwipopcr f cmatto by jim greenblat capjtal squibs- a loudspeaking system installed at the ottawa
