for several months in spite of the inclement weather last friday the little boys and big boys enjoyed various sports the snow was just right for making snowmen and walter grove went skiing while his dad celebrated the final snowstorm by going fish ing he and mr g fockler returned with 231 suckers and the neighbours have been enjoying fish dinners immensely we reserve the right to limit- purchases according to supplies available seldom seen our maple syrup run is over for another year in fact it hardly started this year at all and we are rather lamenting the fact that we even made syrup at all in other years weve had a hired man and while he looked after the chores and came back to the bush now and again to help out i would do duty in the sugar shanty however we will have a few gal lons of maple syrup to show for our work the stock will all be happy to know that the syrup season is over because their meals have been rather sketchy and offtime during the past week or so the cows went a little off their milk because one day they would be milked at six oclock in the evening and the next day at about nine or ten oclock theres something fascinating albout a sugar bush the air is begin ning to get warm and the crows set up a dickens of a racket in the swamp the rolbins are quite cheery and haipny about the whole affair a few squirrels and chipmunks are dashing along the rail fences look ing over secret caches of provision i guess and above all quite happy about everything in general the patches of snow that still re main in the bush are about all thats left to remind you that winter held us in a long and tiresome grip the smoke from the shanty goes swirling off into the vast nothingness of the bluegrey sky schoolchildren dawd ling along on their way to school usually take a long way short cut home so that they can come along and possibly try a little of the fresh made maple syrup on a dish maple syrup is somehow or other the break between winter and spring no matter what kind of weather we get after the maple syrup season it never seems to be very long until the buds come out and we have a real spring session work and seeding and all that there was a time not so long ago when the maple syrup season was one of the best times on the farm help was plentiful there would be company at all times of the day and night at the shanty young fellows from j the village would beg ho get the chance to gather sap and then spend the night while we boiled it off with a raging flre in the old stove in the shanty we would yawn and play cards and then have a tremendous big midnight meal of eggs boiled in the sap along with great slabs of bread and butter and plenty of syrup still warm from the pan on cold nights we used to even burn parts of old rubber tires which were carefully hoarded up for that job during the spring and summer the young men are gone there isnt even help on the farms it is a crime now to burn a tire for a purpose like that re dogs running at large iitakc notice that on and after may first tho bylaw forbidding dogs to run at large wlu bo enforced dog owners please take warning ika d kusxelii constable village of stouffville ringwood mr and
