quantities of bacon and other pork products necessary to meet the wartime require ments of the united kingdom and the consequent necessity of cur- tailing slaughter for domestic use in canada the following action has been taken under a new order of the bacon board concurred in by the wartime prices and trade board on and after march 1st 1943 persons not already licensed to slaughter hogs under previous ord ers of the bacon board but holding slaughter permits from the wartime prices and trade board shall not exceed 75 of their 1941 average weekly number of hogs slaughtered by or for them for sale or further processing in canada see following paragraphs for further explanation regarding areas concerned this order applies to all who hold slaughter permits from the wartime prices and trade board and who are located in what is generally known as old ontario to all those holding such permits and located in or slaughtering for sale in any town or city with a population of over 5000 in the maritimes quebec manitoba saskatchewan and alberta and that part of british columbia known as greater vancouver this order does not apply to holders of slaughter permits in any part of what is generally known as new or northern ontario or british columbia excepting the greater vancouver area it does not apply to farmers slaughtering hogs for consumption on their own farms only these do not require slaughter per mits and are not subject to this new order persons already licensed to slaughter hogs under previous orders of the bacon board will continue operations under their present status that is they are still restricted to 50 per cent of their 1940 weekly average for distribution or sale in canada wm helmkay 76 p s residents on the second conces sion of uxoridge township for the past 25 years william helmkay passed away suddenly at his fine home there last saturday in his 76th year he had been ill only a few days from a stroke the late william helmkay was born at musselmans lake member of a pioneer family in the district as a young man he married nellie milton and the couple took up farm ing always residing in the same neighborhood mr helmkay was a progressive farmer and equipped his place with modern conveniences and a lovely home about five years ago mrs helm kay passed away and there survives the father five sons and daughters of a family of seven born to them the family misses eva and velma helm kay and etoyle mrs gardiner also two sons amos now overseas and grant another son freeman it will be recalled was lost on a hunting trip in noi them ontario and his occurred satur day of dr henry vanzant vs at his residence in oshawa in his ssth year one of the best known figures in the rural life of that district he was the last survivor of the family of the late aylmer vanzant of markham township where he was born on september 5 1854 on 10th concession just south of stouffville his long life and career was interestingly varied and colorful a graduate of the college of vet erinary surgeons at toronto dr vanzant practised at various periods in oshawa brooklin stouffville and aurora at stouffville he lived in the taun home on albert street westend for a period of twentyfive years he wrote for the farmers advo cate and the canadian countryman reporting upon the importation of stock and sales from 1923 to 1928 dr vanzant was the meat and milk inspector in oshawa an ardent sportsman and an en thusiastic member of various gun clubs he was rated as one of the best marksmen in the district when in his prime dr vanzant was predeceased by his wife the former margaret staple- ton in 1919 he is survived by two daughters mrs rev chapman of hamilton and mrs russell mclaugh lin of lcwvan sask and three sons roy and clarence of oshawa and ross at
