the tribune stouffville ont thursday march 11th 1943 u touffmllp srtimn established 1888 member of the canadian weekly newspaper association issued every thursday at stouffville ontario eight to twelve pages weekly circulation 1850 copies subscription kates per year in advance in canada 200 in usa 250 a v nolan son publishers notes and comments the two extremes sir william mulock once startled canada when he as postmaster general introduced the penny postage now it seems his grandson w p is going to the other extreme since we are to have four cents postage on letters may adopt public ownership the quebec legislation which opened last week is expect ed to introduce legislation enabling it to take over all pri vately owned hydro systems in that province quebec has clung tenaciously to private ownership as against public ownership of all hydro electric properly handled the public enterprise is the superior method and can be the cheapest power to spite the face how strange it is that in this year of 1943 a group of canadian workers in ontario should decide to threaten the powers that be by announcing that if they cannot get as much beer as they require when they require it they will retaliate by refusing to buy victory bonds and by selling those which they have already bought how everybody would laugh at a man who announced that because the city would not run a water main to his house he was not going to save any more money and in addition he was going to cancel his fire and life insurance policies yet there is little to choose between the attitude of this little group of work ers and rthe man who wanted a water main a plea for the sunday school no nation can be truly great that neglects god and so when we learn that the markham township sunday school association is promoting a campaign to increase interest in ithe sunday school we consider they are laying a good foundation for the next generation of canadians the association is running a series of small advertisements intended to impress on the people the advisability of send ing the children to the sunday school the sunday school is the foundation of the church for it is most unlikely that a child that never attended ss will ever be a church goer more than ever today the sun day school is needed once upon a time family prayer and bible reading was common in the home today it is un common because of that situation let us all get behind the sunday school the mother or father who permits their children to grow up in ignorance of the sunday school may bring great condemnation on themselves yet the halfempty sunday schools right around us are mute evidence of the indifference people hold for the sunday school and church today hospitalization costs should be spread the amount of 3039 spent on indigent hospital patients by the village of stouffville as reported in our last issue while a big sum for a small village is not all borne by the taxpayers of the village one half of this amount is paid by the county of york but even then the sum of 1500 in direct taxation requires two mills on our tax rate so that it is quite a formidable item the strange thing about the situation is that stouffvilles hospital costs have jumped faster than those of any muni cipality in the whole county of york with but one excep tion in the year 1942 elderly people naturally graviate to villages and towns to retire and many of them have only enough for normal expenses when sickness comes they are unable to meet the increased cost and thus it falls on the municipality in which they were living at the time they took ill not in the municipality in which they may have spent most of their life hospitalization should be bourne all by the government or by the county and notby the individual municipality if for no other reason than the one here set out spread over the whole of the county no one municipality would be over burdened it is a good job for a place like stouffville that half the costs are now spread over the whole county otherwise we would have a noticeable increase in taxation over the present rate farewell mr hepburn or is it farewell mr hepburn has resigned the post of provincial treasur er thereby reverting from premier of the province only a few months ago to the status of only a private member of the legislature at the present time premier conarit will be glad to have him off his hands and it is rumored that for getting the former provincial secretary out of the way mr conant will be offered a supreme court judgeship if such a thing proves to be true it is enough to make you sick at the stomach has politics become so rotten that men in high places have to be reimbursed in that way we hope not we would rather think that the suggestion we heard given iby jim hunter was made up in the office of the evening telegram while we did not agree with mitchell hepburns attitude toward ottawa there was much to be admired in the man if he finds another place in which to serve his country he will make his presence felt few public men had the faculty of both annoying and pleasing a tremendous following as did mitchell hepburn sunday school lesson lesson for march 14 in the upper room golden text jesus saith unto him i am the way the truth and the life no man coineth unto the father hut by me john 140 thk lesson as a whole the thirteenth to seventeenth chapters of the gospel of john form a complete section in which we are permitted to get a closeup view of our lords last hours with his dis ciples before going out to gethsem- ane and from thence to the judgment hall and the cross we are permitted to listen as he unfolds precious things hitherto unrevealed to own and then to hear him as he speaks to his father in his great high piiestly prayer in which we have a little sample of that inter cession which he has carried on for his saints ever since he went back to the glory of the fathers house in the 13th chapter we see him wash ing the feet of his disciples this was far more than a mere lesson in hum ility though it was that unquestion ably but it was actually a picture or an acted parable of the service he has been carrying on for over nineteen hundred years for his travelstained servants in this poor scene he mak es himself responsible to keep our feet clean tocleanse us from the de filement we so readily contract by the way santifying us through the washing of water by the word eph 526 all those who are sav ed have been bathed once for all john 1310 see margin by the washing of regeneration titus 35 which cleansed from all sin and un- cleanness at the beginning of the new lite but we need to have our feet washed daily in order that we may have part with christ john 138 in blessed hallowed communion as thus cleansed by the word we are called to represent him in the world while we wait for his return from heaven to take us to be with himself in the place he has prepared as we walk in love we enjoy the sense of his presence with us sustaining and strengthening as in the hour of trial selfconfidence is rebuked in his words to feter we dare not trust ourselves but we are to have un limited confidence in him the traitor judas was never cleansed ty the word vs 1011 he was false from the beginning and the final test but revealed his true condition as he betrayed the lord of glory for thirty pieces of silver verse by verse john 1312 know ye what i have done to you the question suggests that our lord had in mind something tieyond the mere applica tion of water to travelstained feet he would have the disciples enter into the real significance of his service as the one who cleanses from defilement through the word applied in the spirits power psa 1199 verse 13 ye call me master and lord and ye say well for so i am this is a rebuke to all undue familiar ity in addressing him to whom all believers owe fullest obedience we should ever recognize his authority it is noticeable in scripture that never do we read of any disciple ad dressing him only by his given name jesus verse 14 ye also ought to wash one anothers feet we do this as we seek to apply the word to the consciences of those who become de filed by the world and the tlesh as indicated in galatians 01 verse 15 i have given you an example in- his loving care and consideration for his own he has shown us how we should ibe concern ed albout one another endeavoring to be helpers of each others faith and doing what we can to recover any who are in a backslidden condition verse 1g the servant is not greater than his lord he thought no service too menial if it was to help and bless his disciples shall we con sider ourselves too important to stoop to lowly ministry toward our brethren verse 17 if ye know happy are ye if ye do to know the lords will and do it notibrings chastisement luke 1247 andwill result in loss at the judgment seat of christ 1 cor 315 when he makes his mind known it should be ours to obey with gladness and alacrity jas 125 this brings blessing verse is i speak not of you all judas the traitor was excepted the lord know the true state of his heart and recognized in him the one of whom the spirit spoke in psalm 419 verso 19 i tell you before it come that when it is come to pass ye may believe he spoke of judas defection ijeforehand that they might not be taken by surprise but might later on realize it was but the fulfill ment of his own word verse 20 he that receiveth whomsoever i send receiveth me when they could no longer see him in the body his servants were to go forth proclaiming his message to receive them was tantamount to re celving him and god would 90 recog nize it and he added he that re ceiveth me receiveth him that sent me in him god is fully revealed to receive or trust in him is to re ceive and trust in god himself chap 141 let not your heart be troubled they were going forth as his ambassadors 2 cor 520 into a world that hated him and would hate them but their trust and confidence was to be in him even when thesy could no longer see him ked croe food parcels arrive at a german prison camp some where in europe the canadian itetl cross has sent more than two million such food parcels to canadian and lritih prisoners of war in enemy camps in germany occupied france italy and africa since the outbreak of war present output is 100000 each week from five kcd cross packing depots in canada as they believed in god whom they had never seen so they were to con fide in him when he had leturncd tc the father verse 2 in my fathers house are many mansions the fathers house is the home of all the redeem ed family in it there are abodes or testing places for all but he was going on ahead as the forerunner heb 620 to prepaie a place for them by the presentation of his blood in the holiest of all he would have them there in the full conscious ness of sins forever put away verse 3 i will come again and receive you unto myself this is the first clear intimation we have in the gospels of the lords coming for his saints ere he comes with them to establish his kingdom over all the earth veise 4 whither i go ye know and the way ye know ihe was going to the fathers house he himself is the way to that blessed abode verse 5 we know not whither thou goest and how can we knovi- the way it was thomas the doubter who spoke he had failed to appre hend the real meaning of the words of the lord the other disciples were also confused and perplexed verse 6 i am the way the truth and the life the lords answer should have made all clear theie is no way to god other than thiough him he is himself the truth incar nate is found in him alone 1 john 512 every blessing for time and eternity is bound up in christ the hrart of the lesson the lord jesus is the allsufficient saviour not only to deliver from sins guilt but to cleanse from daily defile ment the path of blessing for his people is that of obedience to his word his present ministry as our advocate 1 john2l sustains and restores us when failure comes in his return is our hope and encourage ment we are to live in this world as men who are waiting for him to come and lake us to the fathers house thus occupied with him we shall be enabled to glorify god in all our ways ike zdifofd mail allow me to congratulate you on your extremely informative and newsy weekly
