objectors these men 90 per cent of whom are mennonites from western ontario have been excused from compulsory military training but are employed on the transcanada highway under the supervision of the ontario de partment of highways they work eight hours daily are paid less than seven cents an hour and appear content according to c e tench engineer in charge of the camp they are some of the best workers weve ever had this conchie camp on the montreal river could be compared to settle ments founded by puritans on the atlantic seaboard 300 years ago none of the- men smokes drinks or plays cards there has been no case of absent without leave in the six weeks since the camp started and the problem of discipline has never arisen it was explained for man it is their first time away from home most of them com ing from farms in western ontario later a detachment from toronto stouffville area will be summoned to this camp so far no objectors have been called to camp from markham district the 90mile bus ride from sault ste marie to the camp which included some of the choicest scen ery in canada would have been classed as unnecessary pleasure by heads of families at home army rations standard army rations is the fare of these workers and the cooking house staff reports tremendous ap petites there is no canteen or tuckshop at the camp but men are free to visit a general store in mon treal river just across the river from the camp hours of work are from eight in morning until noon and from one to five after or before work they may fish or hike sleeping quarters are much the same as in army basic training cen tres although the doubledecker ibunks are closer together each worker buys his own clothing but is issued blankets and a pillow ordinary tin washtubs serve as bas
