tonffmue qteitmne leading weekly for whitchurch markham pickering and uxbridge twps vol 51 no22 stouffville ont thursday september 4 1941 eight pages developments near in 4000 robbery monkhouse tailoring establishment loses en clo stock thieves who cleaned out entire stock of ovei 3500 of cloth linings thread and supplies expected to be rounded up shortly believed to have stolen us car parked in town to carry away loot wednesday night stolen car is recovered ikesentment runs high locally against the robbers who last wed nesday night or early thursday morning stripped the entire stocof cloth in yard goods from the tailor ing shop of john monkhouse inci dentally last week marked mrjyionk- houses fiftieth year in business in this town and the manner in which it was celebrated wasnt very pleas ant the thieves gained entrance to his shop so well known on main street almost opposite obrien aven ue by forcing the front door when it would appear that several must have participated in carrying out all the bolts of cloth a couple of suits of clothes leaving behind only about six bolts including some valuable cotton and linings they took dozens of bolts of english cloth not obtain able today at the same time a car belonging to glenis parker of west roxbury a suburb of boston mass was stolen from his fathers home on church street and it is believed this and another car was used by the robbers to carry off the stock so far no trace whatever has been found of the stolen goods the parker car was recovered however on saturday morning be fore daybreak in toronto aban doned on a side street with no li cense plates on the us plates were in the back seat of the car either overlooked by the rob bers or they just didnt want them it is believed they were taken off and the car driven with canadian markers on from stouffville the car radio was removed and stolen also a second radio that the parkers had just brought from to ronto to stouffville after being re paired and which had not been un loaded twelve pairs of womens silk stockings were also taken and anything else in the car of any value the thieves even removed the mud guards hanging on the fenders and carried them off and the clock from the dash police suggested that two cars moved the slock from monkhouses to toronto where it may have been transferred to a truck and possibly shipped to montreal this is only a possibility and there is nothing to substantiate this suggestion the value of the tailoring stock is placed at between 3500 and 4000 by mr monkhouse who says the thieves even took his stock sheets off apprized of the theft on thursday morning constable al greenwood got into contact at onco with con stable barraclough who came to town at once to start an investiga tion which is still going on it was learned that rev robt young saw a car travelling north on church street past bis place around 2 am and in a few minutes two cars pass ed the other way police believe the street was combed for an extra car over the one the robbers came to town in and reaching parkers they found three cars standing out the us car happened to have the keys in the door where they had been left by mistake so that the car proved an easy theft it is just eleven years this spring that mr monkhouse was cleaned out in a similar manner but the thieves becamo bogged down west of stouff ville between the 4th and 5th con cessions on the townliiio and were seen hiding their loot in an unoccu pied house where it was recovered the question now is are the same people at work again why is monk- houses shop a prey for such a clean up one can only imagine how ever the shop stands rather alone and away from any sleeping quar ters and presents a fairly good tar get for thieves who are slick enough to size up a valuable stock that would not be difficult to move altoxa grower iuvaks premiers onions mr albert davis of altona thinks he is the equal of premier ilebburn or any other onion grower since his most recent achievement this year he planted a fairly large patch of ontario spanish that gave marvel ous results and a product equal to anything the premier might put up in fact they are as mild as anything that could be shipped in from the coast of spain the place we got the original socalled spanish onion however it is the size of ab davis onions that will take your eye he showed one in town a few days ago that weighed a pound and a half and said he could produce many of similar size jr band plays in c n e competition the comfort fund is growing do you know that the comfort fund sponsored by stouffville war veterans has sent over 15000 cigarettes to local boys serving with the can adian forces overseas so far each man has been receiving 300 a month but as the number of men on the local list increas es it becomes more difficult to keep up this ratio if you dont help coin jars have been placed in nearly a dozen stores in town- and you are asked to leave your loose change at every opportun ity there is nothing more appreciated than these smokes from home as is readily testi fied by the many letters from the boys which appear in these columns from time to time cigarettes are very scarce in england and your support is needed to send these small com forts of home enrolment high at continuation school high school attendance on the opening day was 116 and
